Help my wife help our boys overseas...

Hey all -
My wife has been "adopting" Marine units in forward areas of late (mainly Afghanistan,) hoping to help keep up their morale until they rotate back. If you've ever been "deployed forward," you know what that can be like - even getting a letter can be a real treat!

Mainly, that's what she's doing - writing letters where she can. She's even done a newsletter, she's calling it the "REMF Reader" ("REMF", in this case, being "Rear Echelon Mother & Friends." Yes, she knows what "REMF" /really/ means...) She's hoping to make it a semimonthly, something they can hand around and read. Some cartoons, some jokes, some sports scores, and "just a little bit of home."

Things being the way they are, postage keeps adding up. What I'm hoping to accomplish with this is simply this - if guys can kick in a buck or two every now and again, we can put that into postage to keep the boys' spirits up. I want to check interest before I go into more detail (and figure out how to work it easily on my own end...)

Of course, they're also asking for "a little taste of Home" in various ways - some of them would like some decent smokes (as I just told someone in a PM - higher-higher has forgotten all about Black Jack Pershing...) some want some coffee other than the stuff that comes in issue MRE's (Taster's Choice decaf, as I recall. Yech - and what's the point?) and maybe some more candy than they're getting (MRE's are notoriously thin on the stuff, and it also gives them something to hand around to the kids.) Some units also do a fair bit of PR to win hearts and minds - and want little toys - like party favours - to hand around to the kids.

And, while we're about it, if anyone wants to pass along a letter to "Any US Marine" over there, just email it to me at dragonland2001 AT yahoo DOT com and I'll print it and pass it along as well when we mail out.

No, we're not a charity. We're not a 501(c)(3). We're just a couple of citizens who are trying to do what we can to support those who are fighting the fight that we are no longer able to. Whatever your feelings are about our involvement in Afghanistan, just remember that it's a /political/ decision that they're there - I'm reasonably sure that most of the guys in-country would rather be in any of half a hundred other places! But, since they're there, we should at least let them know that we're thinking of them...

If I see enough interest in this sort of thing, I'll post up the email address that can be used for donations. Deal?

Sounds like a good thing.
I can spare a few bucks for a good cause.
Keep up the good work.

I can spare a couple bucks as well. Lemme know

Just to win some hearts and minds on here...
This is my buddy Spencer... just got to Afghanistan last week, fighting with the 10th MTN div. Pic is 3 days old.
He's 19 years young, fresh out of high school.
What were you doing when you were his age?

10th Mountain - New York State, right? Where's his AO in Afghanistan? Just because she's sending stuff to Marines now doesn't mean she'll send stuff only to Marines - givvus an address, and we can at least put him on the REMF Reader mailing list!

Donations can be sent to me at dragonland2001 AT yahoo DOT com - same address you can send letters to to have them printed and sent along.

And thank you.

USAF Security Forces tech school. And YES when over there letters and packages are GREATLY appreciated!

I could absolutely spare some $$ to go towards this. THANK YOU to you and your wife for putting forth the effort

and, also a giant THANKS to everyone who has served, is serving, and will serve in our Armed Forces

Hello,

This is Jon's wife, Julie. I really appreciate your donations to help the boys over there. When I found the website and saw the stuff they needed I couldn't help but cry. They need so little and they give so much. I am honored to help them in any way possible. I am in constant contact with a Marine Sgt. who is giving me some much needed guidance. The boys love cigars and there is a place I send the money to who will make sure the boys get their favorite kind. Hope no one minds if I send some money for cigars. :)

If you're interested in getting a copy of the REMF Reader please let me know. my email address is [email protected]. I am open to changing its content if you see a need. Also if you want to see where I get my contacts go to Any.Soldier.com.

Once again, thank you so much for helping me to help them. There are all sorts of support groups for people here in the U.S. but nobody to help the boys who protect our freedom.

Love,

Julie Kelley

THANK YOU Julie & Jon!
@ 19 i was working 2 jobs raising a family. didn't join the Army til a few years later (got out in 1999).

though i was Army i'm sending you a big SEMPER FI! to you! i know the "guys" greatly appriciate it!
yes 10th Mnt. Div is up-state NY. (my last duty station)... some good people up there. those that have served know what that means.

a box of swisher sweets can go far (the cigarillo's.. something like 200 per box IIRC @ $25 a box back then) i smoked the hell out of those things when i was in the fields (they keep the bugs away where as cigarettes don't) ;)

I was still in HS at 19. Never was allowed ot serve because of a shattered knee cap when I was 16 in an auto accident. Really changed where I was heading and wnated to go. TY for this and kepe up the good work you do John, but I have a question. I was under the impresion, from friends that had their kids over there, that postage was covered for anyone deployed. Or is that just for letters? What does it cost to send stuff if not?

I can't say for current, but during both deployments I was on (04, 05) we could send letters out for free but we had to pay postage on packages. Incoming letters and packages needed the same postage as if you were sending it domestically.

As I understand it to work -
- Deployed personnel do not pay postage for "letters home"
- Letters from home require conventional domestic postage (first class post, Priority Mail, whatever.) The timeframe for delivery is still considerably longer than domestic Post (for instance, domestic Priority Post is 2-3 days. Priority Post to APO is something like 2-4 weeks - Parcel Post considerably longer.)

Thanks guys. I sent some cards to a good friends son while he was over there but that was a couple years ago and I'm very forgetful. Thanks for clarifying that.

By way of an update...

We've finally managed to assemble the first wave of shipments - see pix. Six boxen for six different units, all with the typical gedunk that they don't get, stuff that they could get from the PX (if there was one handy,) and a little bit of home.

The second pic is something she came up with on her own - she calls them "Hero Hearts." Little fleece hearts, with some sand in them to give them some weight, and "HH" embroidered on them. It's just a little something they can keep in their pockets to remind them that someone cares.

It's amazing what some guys can keep in their pockets to make them feel better - she just wants to make sure that everyone she sends to has something they can hang on to.

Stuff for the Marines, stuff for the kids they run across - we keep our eyes open. I just wanted to make sure you had some idea of what you were helping us get out to "Da Boyz"...

Thank you, those of you who have donated already!

Jon
