Help....97 Ford Esort

Alright,

My wife has a 97 Ford Escort that should have been crushed years ago. I have working on this POS for days to no avail. It will start and run fine for about 3 seconds. Then the idle becomes really erratic, and acts just like it has a major vacuum leak. Not possible, I have used a ford schematic and traced the lines. Replaced MAF, o2's, and throttle position sensor as well as the IAC . The computer throws one code, something to the effect of " Idle/Fuel metering beyond threshold" (Yeah I've figured that one out, Thanks Ford!!) The only OBD affecting sensors I can think of are the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors (that I haven't replaced yet). Any ideas I'm grasping at straws here?

Try in the Other tech forum here, I've gotten good help in there for my wife's 2000 Focus in the past.

Have you looked for forums that are like NAXJA, but for the Escorts?

Im on several other forums for my other cars. They are just as helpful as naxja is for my Jeep.

X2. Found a great little chevy forum for my step dads truck that was drinking coolant, and still is burning oil and got a set of bad lifters.

Any time a friend of mine is having a problem with their car, first thing I do is try to locate a good online forum and start searching.....even if I have to make a username. There's a lot to be had out there :)

I can't believe y'all missed the obvious problem. There are two words in the title that explain every symptom described. There is only one option here, and the thread author has already hinted at it.

Sorry. There is no help for this make and model of car.

Hey now.....them's fightin' words there.....

I love my 94 Escort. Just turned 180K on it over the weekend, and it STILL gets around 40 mpg :)

Yeah, it's ghey looking, I'll give ya that. But it's a hatchback that's probably hauled more crap in it than I've put in the MJ. Like axles (gotta take out the back seat for them, tho), trannies and TC's, and even a complete 2.5L with all accessories still attached 800 miles one way, non-stop, without flinching.

(the #4 intake valve seat did drop on it about 20K miles ago, and I did replace the head)

Try this forum, it's Escort-specific, but there's precious little tech in it. I lurk it every once in awhile:

I'm with jeff, those motors are hard to kill.
I'd probably still be driving a 93 wagon had the body not rusted away.

check the fuel pressure.

ewwwww. Lurk an Escort forum?!...wait..I think I'm gonna...no, it's past...I'm ok..oh no..:puke:

I hate when that happens.

My wife drives a 97 tracer which is the same thing as the escort. Almost 180,000 on the car. Never gave us any major problems. Honestly I would check the grounds. I had a ground come off and the problem that you describe is what happened. Fixed the ground problem and fixed the not staying running problem. HTH.
