I'm about to pull the head off of my '91 and change the head gasket. I'm gonna need to take it and get it checked out since I'm not entirely sure of the history of the motor and I know its overheated badly before.

What should I expect to pay for a general inspection and cleaning and/or magnafluxing?
If it needs to be decked?
If it needs valve work?

I'm in the Oklahoma City area if that has any bearing on prices.

I had the heads on my '91 rebuilt about a month ago. Only charged me $180 and they left them good as new. Gaskets cost you around $60, manifold gasket included.

Head. Whatever. What are you my english teacher?

mine was 175 for exactly what you want done as far as the machine shop is concerened.

And he says he doesn't pick on people. He's an attorney. That's his job.

I'm not an attorney, just a lowly paralegal.

If we don't help one another become more than what we are then we all suffer.

Oh, and BTW....sorry man, I have no idea where to get work like that done. I'm hoping to just find a set of aluminum headS for mine (yep Sparty, my XJ does have 2 of them :D ).

As does mine...

FTP

I think that just means it requires another head to help it out because it can't do the work of one on it's own.

File Transfer Protocol?

Midian and I both have AMC XJ's (as opposed to Chrysler ones like yours). Ours are "powered" by 2.8L V6 motors.

As for smarter? Ummm....ours don't need all the computer dudas that the rest of you have, so, sure, they are smarter. :D

I met this chick who hangs out by some payphones that apparently does head work for $25.00. I'm not sure that will help the XJ though. :eeks1:

wow.... this topic when way off....... :)
I called a place yesterday and got the following prices

Inspection/Cleaning $20

Decking/Machining $35

Valve Job $140

If they have to do either the machine work or the valve job they don't charge the inspection/cleaning fee.

Sound reasonable?

Yes. Check their warranty.

I can't tell you what FTP stands for.

And are you telllin me the AMC XJ's are old fashion under the hood?

NEVER do a valve job and knurl the guides. Always have the guides sleeved, otherwise you will be sucking oil past the guides and smoking like mad within 20k miles.

fXXX the police? LOL

I wouldn't say "old fashioned." I would say that we use different technology though. ;)

No. lol. Doesn't stand for that either.

Are AMC engines like the old Chevy small/big blocks? Just the block, filter, and throttle? lol
