Has anyone ever reupholstered their head liner and if so how'd it go?? Mine is starting to droop and I need to figure out if I'm going to just replace the whole thing or go buy some new fabric.

It's tedious but can be done with reasonable success. It works much easier if you have two people, one to hold the material up and away from the headliner while the other sprays and then presses/smoothes out the fabric. Be sure to prepare for overspray prevention where you're working on it if you value the surface you've got the headliner board laying on. That adhesive gets everywhere.

When applying it, it needs to be sprayed to where it covers the board nicely, but not too thick where it could press through the fabric - no need to press real firm either, just enough to get it to lay down, then drag your hand across it to smooth it out. Too light with the glue and the fabric will fall once it's dried.

This is the stuff I've used. Don't use cheap adhesive..... nuff said.

I did it on an MJ. I bought a kit online, probably headliners dot com or something similar. To do it right, you need to remove the headliner board, and scrape off all of the old crap. Definitely, use the 3M adhesive spray. It's a pita, but I managed, and as is well known, I have a hard time putting stickers on the window without a wrinkle.

I've done a half dozen in the last 12 years. You can get the material at most fabric stores. It is backed with about an eighth inch thick foam. IIRC it cost me about $25 the last time I did it. I am going to be doing it again very soon as my headliner is crap and I am getting a new backing from a fellow XJ'er in Denver within a week.

So do you always want to replace the backing foam when replacing the fabric??

if you buy the headliner fabric it will come foam backed. the foam is usually deterioratedwhich is why it falls

I'll take a clean terry cloth towel and rub the dried foam and glue off the headliner board, then blow off the residual dust with compressed air before applying new glue and the foam lined fabric.

i usually go to the local upholstery shop and just buy the fabric for it from them. they will sell it fairly cheap usually
