Have XJ audio questions.

how hard is it to do 6x9s in the front doors?

I would say with fiberglass, anything is possible. I would think you would need to do some type of "pod" just to get the sound of them.

If you do any wheeling or mudding you may want to check this out.
No messy wires! Ipod fits inside the unit.

Two models i'm about to get this sucker myself i'm leary of sony head units
as i have only owned alpines but i'm going to try it just cuz of the tune tray.

Very Cool even though I'm not a fan of Sony. FYI, here's a review that I read: "Sony's product description is misleading. iPhone4 and ipod 5th gen can't be used in the Tune tray. Both fit but are not compatible." I hope Pioneer or Alpine come out with a similar design. I hate wires, so this would be perfect.

Seems to me I read another member had done that just recently, might have required a 1" riser spacer - IIRC the magnet / mounting depth was the issue, but the guy loved having four 6x9's in his XJ after it was done.

i dont even use mp3's anymore, that's so 2006 :D

LOL - oh well I'm still guilty of that man, the connections up here in the mountains make my Pandora crap out pretty often still, but it has gotten better.

I'll try to be off MP3 by 2016, sound good? hehe :viking:

Do you have pics where you mounted yours?

don't you usually want to mount tweeters at ear level?

No, not to be "sonically correct". Placing the tweeter farther then say, 6-10 inches from the main driver affects sound staging. Favaguitars will agree since he is an audio engineer...car manufacturers do not design sound systems correctly. Its more of an afterthought based on the interior of the car.

I replaced the head unit with a Clarion NZ501. It's a single DIN unit that has a retracting screen that includes GPS and Bluetooth integrated. Two available optional components provide HD radio and Sirius/XM, for those interested.

The OEM crap Infinity amp that was located under the rear seat, was replaced with a cheap Alpine 4x75 amp I got on eBay and the speakers were replaced with Alpine R series 5 1/4. The fronts are component units (car came with separate tweeters in the door front corners). The rear speakers are two way - tweeter inside - units.

Install was very easy, sound is absolutely great and the bonus of GPS and BT makes a big difference...

Even tho the new Alpine stuff is still good. Im' still rocking my old 7894, 27rms x4, 5v preouts, etc. If one plans to run an amp for all speakers, then the HU output doesn't matter as much.
I know Grimm has his old Alpine still, too.
I usually have a media player or my phone with music on it. But it does play MP3's via cd player. Nice to do that.I know most newer ones do as well. Most of my audio collection, that is not FLAC, is 256kbps/VBR MP3's

I found these in a junk yard for $5.00 they are a great addition to any sound system...

Wow, those are nice fitting. I'm assuming those were OE?

I'm sure those are nice sounding speakers. I "think" I'm more looking for a direct replacement keeping the speaker behind the door panel. The speaker that you have in the door would be nice, but I really don't want speakers that are going to be exposed like that. Can you get a protective screen cover that would fit over those speakers?

The "upgrade" from 5.25 to 6.5 speakers is not worth having the speakers sticking out/mounted through the door panel. I mean do you think your ears are going to really be able to hear the difference? Stick with 5.25s get components for the front and a small 4ch amp and be done with it IMO.

Yes, yes you can hear a noticeable difference., just depends on how muh you like sound quality and volume

I mounted the speakr like that because I used a baffle on the back side to enhance the sound and to protect the backside of the speaker from water above coming down from the windowseal.

YOU CAN mount a more shallow desined speaker such as an ifinity in stock location behind the door panel.

Yes, you can mount them behind the doorpanel if you get a shallow speaker like infinity. Yes these came with traditional mesh speaker grills but they dont do aything my bar grills dont do. My speakers are actually more protected since you can dent mesh grills super easy. Also, you take off the mesh grill after a month and the speaker will b just as dirty/dusty since the holes still let stuff in eventually

just get 5.25 JLs then for the easiest route

I have a Pioneer head unit in my XJ and I will never buy another 1, the face is intermitted with the connections from being that it's a folddown face. Sony is whats going in next and incase anyone asks, no it's never been exsposed to water or any moisture.
