I built my own roof rack and need cheap gutter mounts...any ideas? If anyone has a good design please let me know or give me some info on where to get them cheap. Thanks
I just went to a swap meet and picked up some cheap roof racks and used the ends. They are yakima's, they are the universal kind with the ends clamped on to 1'' diameter tubing. I just removed the tubes and cut them down and welded them to my rack. they work great I have tools and a spare tire on my rack and they stand up very well. The real kicker is I only paid ten bucks for them.
After wheeling for years with a roof rack, my gutter rails cracked in several spots because of the body trying to flex & the gutter mounts pressing down hard on the rail.
Keep this in mind when you build your rack & use some kind of rubber (or other) dampning between the rails & rack to allow for flex.
Here is a link to a previous thread that has a pic of fabbed gutter mounts. If you can't view the pic send me an e-mail I will send ya some pics (been researching this myself).
HERE is a link to a short writeup I did on how I used to build some mounts. I really wish someone would start making them, be more than happy to provide the means to sell them! I have a lot of people asking about them from time to time.
I have tried guttermounts like those picured before. I had the problem of them pulling up on the gutter rail and bending and poping of the trim. Then I remembered I had a yack-rack from my old Chevette (w/ 3.8 buick eng ) and used the gutter mounts from it. Now they pull the trim against the rail and keep it straight.
they are easy to make. just copy a thule/yakima design. for me thule guttermounts were cheap and easy to put my hands on (bartered for them), also you can get the mounts off of ebay damn cheap then cut the top where their bar slides in and just use 1" square tubing and weld it to the bracket.
