Hard launches, drivetrain upgrades?

What should be upgraded when doing full acceleration from a stop on a pavement surface? I'm a bitt worried about those u-joints, is it the weakest link? How about rear axle, maybe it is safer to nail it on '4x4 full-time'? I got 225/70/R15 tires (soon going to 215/75).

U-joints will go first, I've replaced mine 3 times ;) And yes, launching in 4wd will distribute the power better. Although, I usually finally snap the u-joint straps when hammering it to drift a corner than accellerating from a stop. Or just driving down the free way that one time...that was akward...

well one way to look at this is that we use for the most part the same joints as most 1/2 ton trucks and alot of mucle cars so the joints will hold. the staps that hold them will to a point. if there is any play in the yoke you will break the straps and bolts(been there tomany times) A major cause of damage to u-joints is axle wrap once you get the angles off and add power its just a mater of time. and after a while with a 35 you will start to mess up the spider gears from thhe shock load.

I have the same 225/70R15 tires on my strokered XJ and traction is a major problem. Even in 2nd gear I often find the rear end fishtailing if I accelerate hard. I plan to install traction bars to at least eliminate axle wrap and hopefully get more weight transferred onto the rear tires for a better launch.

Haven't had many problems yet, most of my problems were tire wear from not using 4FT (my Toyo's only have about 30k on them and need replacing before summer.) I'm planning on P235/75/15 Wrangler SilentArmor's before the summer's out, probably the new shocks are the biggest improvment on mine right now (the OE's were shot.) My sister doesn't normally have tirewear problems on her's with teh same size Eagle ST's, but Dad's planning on putting the P235/75/15 Michelen Radial X's off Mom's F/S van onto her's since Mom's van had been dead for a while.
