I knew this guy was a fawking freak case but expected him to be an idiot-environmentalist-living-with-bears freak case, not the homeless-guy-argueing-with-the-voices-in-his-head freak case he turned out to be.
How do you know many of the media-darling rabid "idiot-environmentalist" types are not from "homeless-guy-argueing-with-the-voices-in-his-head freak" backgrounds?
After watching the more activist "environmentalist" attendees at many of the USFS and BLM Advisory Council meetings the last ten years you begin to wonder if more of these folks have lost touch with reality. I have seen women outside the meetings in tears screaming into the wind that if the roads are not closed all the tortoises will die. The same for activists in the "enviro-zone" talking in tongues (the description given, when asked if they needed help). These folks do not compromise and they do not have a base in reality. I used to think these outbursts were attention stunts for the media, and later realized these people are sincere (including a sincere belief in a false, somewhat paranoid, reality).
Unfortunately the radical subverted fringes of the sustainable ecology and environmental protection movements have very well grounded legal council litigating to close access at any cost (cost to the government or the ecology they swear to protect).
It's a sad fact that free speech is not a priority noble freedom in the USA media, as illustrated by the resistive press with respect to threats by the radical Muslim community, and the radical fringe environmental community. The media does not want to print dialog and research that might result in physical violence aimed at their employees or physical infrastructure. These terrorists can bomb government buildings in Iraq and animal research buildings in the USA and not get the exposure (let alone condemnation) in the press that they deserve as radicals bent on violence.
The Treadwell case was very sad for the inclusion of an innocent girlfriend, and for the positive media presentation of this mentally ill con-artist before the tragedy. This guy was teaching elementary school children that wild bears were not a danger to humans, and getting paid to do so by grants from the NGS and environmental organizations (along with funds from his film efforts, articles published, and fundraising). There was zero proactive published reports of the false pseudo-science and dangerous opinion Treadwell offered as "facts" to support the fundraising he generated to live his lifestyle. Scientific opposition to his views, and Agency opposition to his presence in the National Park, leaked out only after the deaths.
Would his girlfriend agreed to camp out if the media had told the whole truth (if they had published what was omitted from edited interview transcripts printed before the tragedy, and later printed without the editing)?
The garbage-in & garbage-out reporting of environment threats (and activist threats) should have more oversight (regardless if it is falsely reported degraded water quality in an alpine lake, spider lake, or terrorists burning down a ski lodge, Vail). The concern over environment threats should be reported, although the follow up findings of no threat (after peer reviewed scientific study is documented) seem to fail media recognition.
It just isn’t newsworthy enough to report on those that can harm you (not harm you, harm the media) until someone gets hurt (or killed). The irony is the media was privately pissed off that the girlfriend was able to turn on the camera when asked to, but not familiar enough with the equipment to remove the lens cap.
