GIVE AWAY RIG STUCK IN COLORADO - NEED HELP

Hard to imagine an ebrake doing that, especially to a D60 shaft.

The ebrake parts are forced into the back of the shaft when the spacer fails. When that happens, they catch the studs, and seize the whole thing up.

Similar failure on Tera Brakes.

Avery - pass this on to Josh:

From "Steve" a moderator/member over on Colorado4x4.org:

"If they want to come back to Grand Junction they can have half my garage - along with all my tools and help. Call my cell at 970-260-3848 if they want to do that. I don't have any parts for that axle..."

His Text Response:

'avery-nate and i are in the process of loading the giveaway on the trailer
i talked to yellaheep and we might limp to his house in denver tonight'

Just got a call from Nate,

They basically have three 'bum' rigs right now and one two car trailer.

They are going to replace the rear axle with one of the Super 8.8s off of one of the other rigs and get the Give A way rig rollin once they get to Troys.

They are planning on claling me and giving me updates and I will let everyone know here online how they are doing.

Yeah, Josh and Nate are heading here to drop a Jeep off for the night until they have a better plan.

They may end up swapping out a rear axle from one of their other rigs to the raffle XJ to get it home........ but neither has an SYE and both have 8.8's with the pinion flange....... might be interesting, but swapping out some u-joints and whatnot might make it possible.

Anyone know how short the pinion end of the 8.8 is compared to the D60? There might be a big difference in drive shaft lengths.

Ok, may be a change in plans......

ShawnW from CO4x4 lives in Gypsum just 2 miles from where they're broken down and is running down to Josh right now to discuss the situation. Shawn offered his garage and help to get them fixed and back on the road - if they do the axle swap, this might be the better option for them.

I called Josh about it and he thinks that might be the best scenario......

wow, Cant predict Mechanical breakdown, but the response and help he is receiving is Awesome! nice work fellas!

Off of True Hi 9's Website:

  • 8.8 U-joint centerline to housing centerline is 11.6875
  • Dana 60 U-joint centerline to housing centerline is 13.3125
You might not be too bad off since the 8.8 uses a companion flange which adds to the length of the pinion.

Wow! That's some nasty breakage. It's awesome you guys are all stepping up to help. Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling:D

Should I start heading that way to transport it back to the Front Range?

I have the trailer that transported it to Moab still free and could go get it and bring it back to Denver/Colorado Springs if that would be helpful.

Let me know,
Joe H

i just picked up the correct flange to mount on the driveshaft for installing it to the 8.8 pinion. as long as the giveaway's driveshaft is using standard xj u-joints it'll go on. if somebody wanted to get it from me i'll meet them. lmk, troy has my number.

They have that flange on both of their rigs already - all they should have to do is knock one off the driveshaft from the rig they take the 8.8 from and mount it on the end of the T.W. driveshaft currently under the Raffle XJ.

I'm home now but leaving for Crested Butte in the a.m.(stupid work) so I'm out but the hanger is empty if ya need it jeff will be around.

They're at Shawn's house now and will do the 8.8 swap in the morning.

Looks like they're all set and have a good plan to get going again.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

This damn rig is cursed.:flamemad::flamemad::flamemad::flamemad:

I was getting sporatic updates as my cell service would allow (big dead zone going through the mountains on HWY 50).

HTF does the e-brake seize up on those???? I installed the cables and they were working normal- didn't have the tension too tight.I am now well beyond frustrated with this *%#$@^&* rig.

:explosion:explosion

I've got tomorrow off after I get plates for the Honda. If another hand would be useful let me know.

Fred

Just how special is that shaft? I saw a '67 F-100 with a semi-float D-60, 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. It's down at Western.

you know as bad as it might sound, the guy did get a really sweet jeep for free. so if he has to spend a few bones on a axle or to fix this one is it really that bad?
