There is a time to call a Jeep a loss??? I think that will be when there is nothing left to be able to spend money on... and at that time I will call it a total loss, and cut my losses...

Personally, $860 will buy a lot of tools. It gets expensive to have older, needy vehicles when you can't do most of the work yourself.

well that's a loaded question... I guess it depends on how much she weighs. :laugh:
Thanks to that kind of girlfriend, I got my 88 XJ for $200. I went to go look at it thinking for that price I'd make a truggy, but it was in such great visual shape I thought it would be a waste to cut it up. When I asked what was wrong he went into a long list of charging system not working, no power steering, overheating, etc, etc. I opened the hood and saw the serpentine wasn't moving, harmonic balancer had sepperated ($60 part). Feeling guilty for steeling this thing for $200, I was just about to tell him what was actually wrong... when the girlfriend walked up and said "Did you sell this piece of crap yet? I want it out of here!". I handed him the $200 and completed the deal. One $60 harmonic balancer, three years and now 256,000 miles later... I still have and love my XJ. Moral of the story, she doesnt know what the hell shes talking about!!!!!!

Okay.... we had another discussion on losses. This time I brought up the subject.
All emotions aside, it doesn't make financial sense to keep dumping money into an old rig that can barely get the windows up...
I keep throwing money at my XJ.... I just spent another $300 on the AC controller, new fan blower.... it worked fine for several weeks and now the damn thing is starting to cut in and out again. The last controller I pulled out had toasted connectors.
Now I'm really tempted to drive it down and get an easy $4,500 cash for my clunker.
"Cash for clunkers" ... any XJ loyalist here tempting to go down and trade your soul for the Obama deal?

Ahhh good ol cash for clunkers.... I suggest you type "cash for clunkers" into youtube and see what they do to the vehicles...Do you want to put your trusty XJ through that?

I thought about it, but I'm not sure I want to pay the premium to get a new car as opposed to a 2-3 year old used car for half the price. Plus many folks have reported that the dealers are less inclined to negotiate on a new car if you're doing the cash-4-clunkers. It's extra paperwork and they lose any profit they might have been able to make on wholesaling your trade.
I traded my 93 ZJ for a 2006 Equinox earlier this year. Got a fair trade on the ZJ even with it having 200k miles. I paid $10k for the Equinox with 60k miles, despite the original $28k sticker. It's not quite what I was looking for, but it rides nice, gets 21-26 mpg, meets my basic commuting needs, and I couldn't beat the price.
Did you notice that EPA, "revised" their fuel economy numbers again? Looks like most of the Jeeps went down, but a number of vehicles also went up.
