I have access to a head from a '98 4.0 was wondering if it could be rebuilt by a head shop and then put on my '87 4.0.

Thanks,

Didn't think so. Just wanted to verify. Probably will still get it for my 2000. If it is compatible.

Speaking of which I have heard that the motor from the 2000 XJ is the same 4.0 that was in the 1999 WJ. Is this true?

The head will fit, the issue is the alignment of the intake to the head. I know that an HO head will fit with little problem onto an 87, but honestly I'm not sure how different a 98 head is from the 91 to 96 heads, or if there is a difference.
The 99 WJ and 2000 XJ are similar in that we both have distributor-less ignitions, don't know if the intakes are the same. None of the 2000 and 2001 XJ's we drove seemed to scoot like our 99 WJ with the 4.0.

Well I know that the t-stat housing is different because the temp sending unit is moved from the back of the head. I was not sure about the intake. The things I was not sure about was things like the valves and such with the cam in my '87. I think that I can get around the tempsending unit issue.

I not driven a 99 WJ but I damn sure know that my 2000XJ is pretty peppy. Of course my DD is the '87 so anything will feel peppy compared to that.
