Gear Swap Help/Party?

Hey SEC folks. I just bought a set of 4.10 gears off FrankZ over in the Colorado chapter. I've never done gears but I feel competent and patient enough to try it. However, it would be a lot more fun - and cheaper - if I could do it with the assistance of someone who has done it before and has access to at least some of the tools. I'm thinking probably not until February or later cos I dont feel like working on fiddly stuff with cold hands and I dont have a garage. lol

Some folks on NC 4x4 were talking about having a gear swapping party, but they never got it worked out that I heard. So, I thought I'd see if anyone on here would be willing to help or would want to be a part of a meetup for this. I'm gonna post there too for the locals who aren't on here. Anyone?

That's something I wouldn't mind learning how to do too.

Gear swap is the one thing I didn't do myself, because I didn't feel confident without the gauge/knowledge. I'll sit around with adult beverages and make jokes though!

it might help if you put your real location not just "Not The Mountains :-( ,NC"

Sorry, I'm in Durham. I set it up that way when I first joined. Lots of other folks have weird stuff there too, and, well, sometimes it feels like I'm only half here anyway. :wierd:

Hahaha you'd be welcome to do that. Although I'd probably make you hand me stuff. Can't let the beer go for nothin'. ;-)

Lennie did mine. He and I wheel together a lot locally and he sometimes makes trips with me. He charges $150/axle. There are people and shops near you that set them up and they are on NC 4x4 but I do nto know what they charge.

i'd do it in a heartbeat if you were closer. i've set up many sets of gears....one of them i almost had to make a shim out of a rockstar can because they didn't buy a shim kit....you know who you are...

Is Lennie a member here or how do I get a hold of him?

I like how you think.

I've never done a gear install and have been wanting to learn as the time is coming soon to re-gear mine. I'd love to be around!

I'm not saying I'd be drinking your beer, now that just wouldn't be right! Tool requests must be made early on, the later it gets, productivity suffers.

Lennie lurks here and is internet challanged. LOL! 843-639-1868 Nick knows him and so does Ed and High2by and several others that were at the Crawl in '09 at MM. He uses a Duce for a camper and wheels an MJ.

I have never set up gears before but would love to learn how to.

I'm in NW Raleigh, so PM me if you're interested in having a spectator/beer getter/Phonics Monkey when you do it.

All you guys need is somebody to set up the gears and you could have a M&G/Tech day! Awesome!

I'd come if it wasn't so far just too see it done. How far is Durham from Knoxville?

Ive got a guy near Lincolnton that does a great job and doesn't charge much at all, he recently did mine and hes a good honest guy. He even let me wrench with him to learn a thing or two. pm me if you want more info.

Yeah, I'm 3 hours from Knoxville. I'd sure like to get out to NC and see some members.

Lincolnton is pretty far I think. Maybe I will call Lennie, anyone know where he is located?

Oliver's on NC4x4 is offering $200/axle special, but I figure if I take it to a commercial shop then I don't get to watch/help/learn. If I'm going to BFE Utah in this thing one day, I need to know how to fix just about everything. So, there is definitely observable gear work ahead in the future, whether with me making a mess of it on my own or with somebody who knows more helping. I'll keep ya posted.

PacificEd, yeah, it sometimes seems like there's a big SEC split between east of the mtns and west of them. I'm always jealous of you Tennessee guys 'cos I see you having get-togethers and stuff all the time, but we Carolinians rarely seem to be that organized. When Tellico was still open I bet a lot of meetups happened there, but where now? Maybe we should do an SEC east-west meetup at Callantee in the spring?
