funky gear oil

I would check it after a couple hundred miles and see what it looks like, but it will probably be fine. usually water in the diff comes in through either the axle seals or the breather tube being submerged or missing.

no this was the trans is there a breather on the 5 spd? maybe i need to relocate that.

during the hurricane i had to ford some water it was not that high but if a breather dropped i could see it picking up some water

What year is your XJ? the early ax-15s don't have a breather hose on them, they just vent around the shifter. the later ones have a breather tube that is built into the cap that holds the shifter in place, here is a writeup of extending the breather on the later model AX15s. http://katy.tx4wd.org/tech/trannybreather.htm

If you have a renix rig with a BA-10 in it, the breather is located next to the shifter handle, you can see where it is connected to in this picture http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv109/centuryghost/ba10.jpg

hope that helps.
