Fuel tank straps... replace with bungie?!

So... in the process of removing the tank, I snapped one of the rods holding it to the frame. And at the rate the bolt is coming off the other rod, I think there's a good chance that rusty old thing is gonna snap too.

Can anyone think of an alternative strap solution? Right now, I think a properly-sized bungy cord would work.

Bungy cord? I might do that as an emergency repair out in the sticks, but I would definately get new straps.
Yeah, this would definitely just be a temporary thing... normally I'd just wait for the right parts and drive my other car, but it conveniently decided to blow its water pump the day after I started this project!

Still don't do it. At the very leasr, the filler neck leaves no room for play. You will break a line with the least amount of play.

just make your own out of threaded rod from home depot or any hardware place, i belive i used 5/16, bent the end to about an 80 degree angle and put a nut on the end and then put it in the slot. gime a few minutes and ill get the pic

Remember, "a pint's a pound the world around," so despite the obvious variation between the weight of water and gasoline, 20 gallons of gas will weigh close enough to 160 pounds plus the tank itself, that bungees aren't a very secure solution. If you need a temporary solution I'd suggest you get some 3/8 NC threaded rod and bend the ends to hook into the body. Study the heads. You might even be able to duplicate the heads by bending the end of a rod very tight and short and putting a nut at the end, or otherwise getting a secure hook by hammering, etc.

've done a few tanks, and just went ahead and sheared the bolts, then welded a new piece of 3/8 threaded rod to the stubs.

PERFECT! My mom's letting me borrow her WK while I get this thing sorted out, so that mostly relieves the pressure of finding a temporary fix. I have a hardware store within walking distance, so I should be able to get that rod and have a more permanent solution. Thanks!
