front turn signal, rear flashers?

i have a '98 cherokee and sometimes when the left turn signal is on, both of the rear blinkers flash with only the front left on. this only happens sometimes and i have also seen another cherokee do it too. anyone else have or had this problem. it confuses me.

if it has trailer wireing on it it could be the unit that cobines the brake and turn signals into one light per side otherwise i would say check the grounds for the rear lights and then the turn signal switch a short there in the internal contacts could cause the problem also
