Fricken oil pan

So, yesterday at 11am started on the oil pan change. at 230 i finally got the oil pan off. 4 layers (minimum) of seals: rubber, cork, cardboard (some sort of paper) and rtv holding it on.

put on the new rubber gasket, used rtv on the sides, and just a bit on the front and back to hold gasket in place.

at 800 i called it a day, screws were not lining up.

so this morning at 9 went back out there. finnaly got all the holes to line up, except 1. after a bit of work, got it all screwed down.

filled it with oil, put on a new filter, and started it up.

out the fricken back part of the pan, had an old faithful going on.

anyone know a shop in the springs who replaces oil pan seals? dont want to go through all that again.

may be seeing me shortly.

took the pan back off, rear seal was cocked inward. using rtv, put a bead down, then put seal on that. going to let it dry for a couple minutes and then try again.

if it screws up, ill be at your shop monday morning, leaking a crap of oil

Sounds like your pan is tweaked somehow. I've done several of those pans including rear main seals and all of 'em went together easy and leak free......With all the layers of gasket and goop you mentioned, I'm thinking that pan was someone else's frustration prior to it being yours.

That sucks brutha.

X2 Instead of putting a good pan on, they slapped a temporary "bandage" on it.

pan went on better the second time, but snapped a bolt. was one of the two sided ones for bolting on standoffs (leaving it in, not sure if one bolt will make a differance). and the damn tranny lines keep getting in the way when i put it back on.

leak is still there, but not as bad as it was the first time. still, would need 5 quarts every mile at this rate of loss.

sucks doing this when you have to crawl under the vehicle. had two bottle jacks, sitting on cinder blocks, to get it high enough to remove pan.

read a writeup afterward. never removed the starter. soooo, tomorrow, round 3. removing starter, and thinking will add the rear main while i have it off. need more oil anyway so have to go to parts store.

thanks. got jack stands, they are just not tall enough.

was going off the front frame locations. will go from behind the lca's this time.

what i need to buy is some air sockets. hand cranking them on and off really blows

It seems like I stuffed a bottle jack between an axle tube and one of the frame rails to make a little more room. I had also removed the tires, track bar, and maybe the lower shock mounts. It's a PITA when you are working on stock height.

may take tires off. got a 4.5 lift, so that helps a bit, but it really does suck doing this.

bad part is, it wasnt leaking that bad before, but was dripping on the exhaust pipe. so it had a constant burning rubber smell

My 88 did the exact same thing. Everytime I would come to a stoplight, there would be a bit of smoke and the smell.

It was the Rear Main. I never fixed it, drove it into the ground the way it was. I got almost 300,000 miles out of her before she quit, and it wasn't even motor related, something electrical that I didn't want to screw with, so I parted it out.

sigh.

well, will be doing it tomorrow. maybe all this hassle is the girls way of telling me she's still broke

took the oil pan off again, same thing as last time, the rear gasket was pushed in. thinking this is the cause of the leak (duh) but not sure about the first leak i started with.

took the two bolts holding the lower part of the rear main off, but the mount is not moving. also the oil smells differant, like burned.

about to take the cap off, but before i do, what is the best way. dont want to screw it up.

have to go get a new gasket. dont want to risk putting it back on after two times being smooshed

That is a great write up. I will be using it in the future...

I am guessing you tightened the crap out of the sump bolts and crushed the oil pan gasket.
Thats just what i think you may have done. Did you use a torque wrench to tighten the pan bolts?

think i over tightened as well. didnt see the torque specs from the other write up i was doing. this will help, thanks

done

took off the rear main seal cap, and saw my problem. missed a part of the old gasket. 4 piece was used, and that piece was still in the cap.

rear main done, oil pan done, tran line fixed. and it only took 3 and a half days. yay... tomorrow, topping off oil and tran fluid, starting on front/rear bumper
