Franklin TN street laws about doors

is it legal to ride with no doors in and around the Franklin TN/middle TN area? took the front doors off today and dont want to put them back on unless i absoutly have to b/c of street laws
 
ready, this is a really complicated task....

go to the police station

ask politely whether or not it is legal to drive with your "Removable" doors off

say "hi officer, i was just wondering, its legal to drive with my removable doors on my cherokee off right?"

and see what he says.

then say thanks

thats what i did, no prob, the cop i talked to was like yea why not its a jeep right and i was like welll cherokee, not wrangler, and he was like ehh its still a jeep, but my town is kinda a small one, maybe different if yours is big
 
I was wondering the same thing... the locals dont really like me or my jeep (illegal wheeling incidents :() a ton so I dunno if its a great idea to do that...
 
Don't know about TN, but here in PA it is considered a Motor Vehicle Code violation as well as a State Safety Inspection violation. It is legal in a vehicle with no roof, hence CJ/YJ/TJ are Ok when roof is off. Otherwise if the officer wants to break stones he can write you up. So here you may be looking at two fines. Just thought I would let you know.
 
always run a mirror, if you dont have one dont take em off, youd be a target if they are runnin a slow day. if the local pd dont like you, have someone else ask em, someone they dont no
unless you are utterly hated, im sure the cops wont bust ur balls.
ive been in a few predicaments with wheeling (places i thought were ok....)
the best way is to ask. i dont see why it should be illegal since they provide no support, and wranglers can do it, why one not the other??

No..no...no...and NO!

This is the WRONG way. It does not matter what you are TOLD, only what the LAW is. Go to the libary...find the vehicle code for your state....read it.
That is the ONLY way to KNOW what is leagal and what is not. The problem with asking John Q Law about it is they may not KNOW....and if they are wrong...they will not pay your ticket, or testify for you in court...it is still your responsability to KNOW the law.

Try it...it is not that hard.

i guess if its a big town, but if you live in a smaller town, with say 3-7 cops, and a couple say its no big deal, you shouldnt have trouble, but if your going all over the place i agree with Rev, check the Law for an official answer
 
I tried looking the info up at the libary and the DMV. Nobody had a clue as to where to point me. I'm doing it, I still get the hibby jibbies when a cop is behind me.

Well, when I lived in Nashville and was going to Nashville Auto-Diesel College(1985). Yeah I'm old, there were a couple of people around that were running various vehicles without doors. In fact I saw a Caddy without doors, front fenders or a hood, drive right by a Metro cop and he could have cared less. I think TN is like SC, if it runs you can drive it.
 
i live in murfreesboro and i have never heard of such a law. one of my friends drives a lifted wrangler with no doors and hangs his leg out when he drives. as far as i know he has never gotten in trouble.
 
im a cop in NJ and some trooper friends told me if you are gonna run the doors off you have to take them off during inspection, or its altering m.v after inspection. they said they dont really care as long as it doesnt look to crazy. dangerous. every cop is different, i think as long as u have the mirrors, be alright.
 
In Ohio there is no law about doors. Except all doors must operate properly. No doors can fall under "unsafe condition" Depends on the cop.
If your winch or plow lift or recovery points sticks out past your bumper they will get pissy too.
 
yeah i live in kingston (close to knoxville) and drive this into town every now and then, never caught any trouble from the law

as previously posted, every state is different, but just so you know what to look for, here is where/how it's listed in wisconsin.

Chapter Trans 305

STANDARDS FOR VEHICLE EQUIPMENT

Trans 305.19

(2) (a) Every motor vehicle, except those manufactured with
removable doors or without doors, shall be equipped with doors.
Open top designed vehicles are not required to have operating
doors when the vehicle is operated without a top.



which means that in wisconsin it is also illegal to remove the doors on CJ/YJ/TJ unless the top is off.
 
As I read that, it looks like you could run a CJ/YJ/TJ without doors, as they're manfactured with removeable doors. Or am I misreading that?
