Ford truck guys.......

I had a 93 f-150 straight 6 and it was great. Ford trucks make the rest seem like the cheap plastic junk that they are. If you put an expensive gale banks turbo on it it will run as good as the newer diesels and last a long time. Banks and non turbo Fords are a match made in heaven. In our thin air even more. What ever you do make sure you dump a quart of 30w oil, quart of two stroke oil or a diesel lubricant like Lucas fuel conditioner in every tank to keep the injector pump happy. The new Ultra low sulphur fuel has most of the lubricating qualitys refined out and pumps are expensive.

So what ya plan on flipping it for? I'll need a tow rig sooner or later :D

Dunno. Depends on how much I end up putting into it to get it driveable and sellable.

I gotta source a full hub setup, caliper and hardware, brake line and once that's rolling....... gotta drive it to see if it's worth fixing. I'll also probably get an emissions test to ensure it's worth making "purdy".

Otherwise, this would be a perfect rancher's beater out in the boonies.

You're not reading what I said.....

IF the thing doesn't run right, or won't pass emissions = rancher's rig.

IF it does, then I'll spend the money to fix 'er up.

you don't want that cummins crap anymore anyway, that ford probably has a navistar motor.
better yet tell the wife ou sold her TBSS and got her this because it gets better mileage. see how well that goes over.

ps I didn't think diesels had to pass emissions?

Well Troy depending on how much you paid for that is a nice truck. I happen to be an expert on that style truck since I have 4 of the Pre-powerstroke ford diesels right now. The main killer of the older Fords was the head gaskets and a problem called cavitation. Cavitation is when air bubbles in the cooling system attach to cylinder walls and the vibration from the diesel causes the air bubbles to eat though the cylinder walls. Not many people know about this problem and it is commonly thought to be a head gasket since they are weak on the IDI engines but there are a few ways to tell the difference. Just an FYI this is a problem on 7.3 powerstrokes as well. Glow plugs are another problem if they are not Motorcraft brand they break off in the cylinder and destroy the engine. The only other real problem is the injector return lines leak. but you can get a kit to replace them from Napa for like 90 bucks. These can be a pain if you have never done them before.

Ditch the auto hubs they are junk.

It has an external slave which is a pain to replace and a real pain to bleed but I have done it so many times on my truck now I can do it in about 20 min.

If you need it I have a complete TTB Dana 50 front end behind my shop since i just swapped a Dana 60 in the front of my IDI.

The tack is an easy fix the sending unit goes bad and is right on top of the injection pump gear cover.

probably a tensioner as far as the belt goes.

Emissions are not a problem at all on these I have the injection pump turned up and the one emissions thing disabled on my truck and it still passes with flying colors.

If you have any other questions or need some parts (I also have a parts truck in my yard right) or some help fixing it let me know.

David

I have a retired neibor (fixed income) that needs a P/U truck. I know he has 2500 saved up right now and he would take a beater. Not saying thats all Troys truck is worth but if anybody runs across a cheap beater truck let me know.
