Floor Replacement, Man what a job

Re: Man what a job

hey why not strenthen the frame while your in there and all (I know its a big project already)

That has actually been considered. I was thinking about adding frame stiffners already.

I've been considering adding some reinforcement plates for the sliders and beefing the area where the crossmember is just incase I ever decide to go to a long arm type crossmember.

At the rate I'm going, I'll be lucky to just get the floor in before the Crawl.

Re: Man what a job

These are out of order, but I just got them. Here we go...

Hopefully we'll have some after shots of the new pans in soon.

Re: Man what a job

Wow... you guys call that rust... up here we call that "a little staining." :roflmao:

I could put a basketball through the hole I found in my floors when I lifted the carpet in my trunk. I had to cut away and replace about 3 feet of frame rail and one of the shackle brackets. I didn't know that large drain plug you removed existed, because when I look up at my floors from below the jeep, all I see is carpet right there. The metal rusted away and the plug fell onto the road years ago.

Re: Man what a job

YJ-Genral: I guess I could have replaced the entire pan, center hump and all. I felt that by leaving the center hump and unibody rails there was more strength there when everything was cut out. It also would have required a lot of work getting everything out of the way like the t-case shirter, trans shifter, e-brake. Also getting to the front lip of the pan is next to impossible so I just left it there. I'm happy with what I did. Also the center hump will be donting little pieces here and there to repair small holes under the rear seat, etc.

Kastein: The driver side floor was the good one. The passenger side was totally missing above the muffler. There were also other large holes in that side. I guess I should qualify my statement about rust by saying it was rusty for a "Southern vehicle". It came out of North Caolina. I'm glad I don't have rust like you guys have.

Welded in most of the pass side pan. My welding sucks but I'm getting better and the floor seems to be in nice and tight so.......now you know why I did the passenger side first! Ha! Don't tell my wife.

Drivers side is next. Then I need to decide what kind of liner to use. Any recommendations? It all looks the same to me.

Because she's so light that even your sketchy beginner welds should hold up no problem? :dunno: it's all in how you phrase it...

Re: Man what a job

:scared::shocked: I sure as hell hope not! Future husband who doesn't end up on the couch I wouldn't mind though...

Re: Man what a job

you could work as a Press Secretary-- then you just have to "spin" other peoples' remarks into something they aren't (intelligible).

P.S. currently typing 'cuz I'm probably stuck on the couch tonight anyway.....

Wow. Seems like every few days there's a thread about rotting XJ floor pans. I am so ashamed of all the whining I did a while back about the "staining" in my XJ. You guys know the true meaning of rust. I feel truly blessed now!

BTW Kastein, my interior is back together again (yes, I still have carpet). Just left to bolt the seats back in.

Awesome - I'm actually looking for a carpet for a 98 these days... my new one came without, because it was in such rough shape when the PO (a member on here) bought it. It's only got a few little bubbles in the usual spots and really looks pretty clean, I intend to clean it down to bare metal and throw a few coats of bedliner on it, then put a carpet in it. The seats aren't actually bolted in right now, and the back seat is full of spare parts, which makes it a little interesting to drive across the street to the parking lot I work on it in.

I would post pics of my rust but I think I already did somewhere, and I either lost my camera in my move or it got stolen... again. Not much of a loss, it was really crappy, just wish I knew where the memory card was.

Well, I have extra carpet (you know the one I got from the clunker XJ in PA a couple months back). I decided to keep mine since it was so heavy duty. If ya want the "new" carpet ...

Re: Man what a job

What color is it? I'm sorta picky about stuff like that :looney: I'm looking for dark grey / light grey if necessary.

Believe me, I understand completely - I'm pretty anal too. It's tan, so I guess you can't use it. It's clean and new looking, but I decided to keep my old beat up carpet. I couldn't believe the difference in weight between the "new" carpet & my original. Insulation is a big deal for me. I can throw around the new carpet with 1 hand, while I need both and some effort to pick mine up. Good stuff. Plus mine doesn't shed, and it seems the other does. I guess Jeep "cheaped" out over the years :laugh3:

Re: Man what a job

That's not rust. It is a sticky, oily substance that was all over the panel. Probably the residue from the stamping oil from when the panels were stamped in 1996. A wire wheel takes it right off.

Re: Man what a job

Okay, I got some polyurethane seam sealer on the way to seal all the seams between the old and new floor. Also got the floor plugs on the way from Team Cherokee.

Now for some final prep and paint, them seam sealing, liner, and then the plugs.
