With summer upon us, I thought I'd start a fishing thread for us sierra folk... You don't have to tell us your favorite secret hole, just the general area.. Right now, my favorites seem to be the west fork of the Carson River, Round Lake(hike in), and the Walker River..

I caught this bad boy on the carson the other day.. 4lbs, 18 inches

Thats a prety fish... Afew places I go are chilli bar, just behind the dam, on the So. fork american river, anywhere on the american from coloma to folsom, ice house is a good lake... salmon are running about 10 miles up from folsom towards coloma.

I always had a great day at Caples lake. The only problem is that the dropped the water level down last year or the year before last so low to fix the damn they probably killed all the fish in it.

I also really like Silver Lake (about 7 miles from Caples lake)

Then also there is Sly Park Lake. They are all close to each other and chances are if they aren't biting at one lake I just drive to the next one!
Usually just about any color powerbait works well. AND YOU WILL KILLEM WITH A SILVER/GOLD castmaster!!!

Wrights Lake is also another really great place for trout. You will have the best luck floating a clear bobber with a black dragon fly nymph fly on a 2-4ft florocarbon leader and just keep casting from the boat dock in towards the channel.

Boy am I excited for fouth of July weekend!! I'm headed to Rollins Lake to give it a go.

ps: That looks like a great catch!!! Congrats on a job well done!

caples and red are doin very good this year, no issues with the water levels killing any fish.

You just put a huge smile on my face!

I didnt even bother last year because someone else told me it was tough times at one of my favorite lakes... Caples!!

fishing is my thing, though im mostly warm waters. these are just some of the fish from this year. sorry there not all trout!!

Damn dude! Your pretty serious with all the photos! hahaha I lived in Dallas, TX for a while and thats when I fell in love with the sport of fishing. I even went to a couple of the Bassmaster Classics at Lake Worth and Lake Lewisville.

I havent been so lucky since comming back to Sacramento. I go down to millerpark/discovery from time to time for stripper but never anything big. I haven't been fishin in months now that I think about it.

i stayed in McKinney for 2 months last year, all i did was fish the ponds!! its was crazy good fishing. those mocking birds trip me out man!

Yeah, MckINNEY is the nice area. My favorite spot was under a freeway offramp where the sand bass spawned yearly.

Great times in TX. The barge on Lake Lewisville was great too! Slab Crappie all night long! I almost hooked an aligator gar one early morning after slaying crappie all night on the barge.

Well shoot, maybe we should make a sacramento Jeep fishing trip! hahaha

A lot of good info in here so far guys! Keep it comin!

Are any of you familiar with the bishop area?? I am thinking about heading down there for a week pretty soon here.. I wanted to get some tips on where to fish before I go, though... Also, any good cheap/free places to camp?

Too many great trout holes.

Caples is great, the inlet stream from Lake of the Woods is a blast to hike. Lots of 6-10" trout.

Soda Springs area; Cascades lakes, Long Lake and Devils Peak Lake are awesome for Brookies this time of year.

Dark Lake next to Wrights Lake is a hidden jem for big Browns.

If we plan a trip, I'm in!

A buddy of mine was tellin me about a lake near big pine with golden trout. I have not been there and dont know which lake he was talkin about, but look around mabey you will find it. I will ask him the name of the lake, and get back to you.

Court Wright Reservoir, 4x4 up the Dusy/ Ershim trail to the head waters, bust out the inflatable 12 ft boat, yank an optima from the XJ, hook up the trolling motor and fish finder, and troll for trout. My record is 21 fish all 1.5+ lbs in a half day, biggest ive caught from there is approx 5 lbs. Hard to beat that kinda fishing in Ca.
Also love back packing up in the golden trout wilderness to the lakes that are unnamed even on the topo maps.
My most common fishing spot is unfortunately Lake Isabella... only because its close. It has good Crappie fishing, good catfishing, fair trout fishing, poor salmon fishing, and everything else isn’t worth wasting your time on imo.

So I went to Caples on Sunday and couldn't catch a fish to save my life. (Of course i didn't go to sleep the night before. I decided to drink my Saturday night away until it was time to leave Sunday at 5am, I didn't sleep all night. This could have attributed to why I could not seem to focus on fishing as I was so hung over!!! )

Of course my friend that I went with claims he is the greatest ever because he landed two trout. (that amounted to 10" combined)

Not only was I sick as a dog on the way home, I was trapped in the car with "fish slayer". hahaha Hasta

Shity day but i will be back..... just hopefully I will get some sleep the night before and won't be hung over!!

I do very well at Hell Hole on Kokanee and Lakers.

when ts off at caples its off...but when its good its GOOD! been there and had 20 fish days off the bank. sorry to had a bad fishin day but thats better then any day at work.

On my way home from deer valley I stopped at caples and landed a 16" trout, 10th cast on a blue fox,
