Exhaust Rattles on the crossmember

So I've read when you have worn out motor mounts, your exhaust can rattle on the crossmember, but in my case; it started rattling after I replaced my motor mounts... My question is it the crossmember mount or that square exhaust bushing that would need to replace to stop the rattling? A few months ago I did my uniframe stuffiness and I checked my crossmember mount and there was no tear, cracks or anything. Looked good but then again looks can be deceiving. Just wanted to get some input as to which would need replacing. Thanks!

I grabbed a floor jack, and a short piece of 4x4 wood. Jacked the pipe up right under the hanger. Worked like a charm! It bent the metal rod into the right position!

I've done the same, but was always a little worried about stressing the exhaust manifold. Now I loosen the flange (header/down pipe) and loosen the clamp at the CAT inlet, then jack/bend the pipe hanger. If you end up with 1/2" clearance between the pipe and the cross member you are likely good to go.

I've also had pretty good luck loosening the flange bolts and the CAT inlet, jamming a piece of 3/4" wood under the pipe on top of the cross member, then yanking down on the CAT/Muffler section and then re-tighten. This usually lasts for awhile, but isn't any sort of permanent fix. You'll usually (often) end up with 1/2" of clearance after removing your 3/4" thick wood block. Things tend to sag again after a few months. Jacking up the muffler mount at the rear transmission mount lasts longer.

So does that exhausted hanger rod bend over time then? or is that just the only viable option to fix the rattle? I read somewhere that the bushing that the rod sits in isnt able to be replaced but I swore I've seen a thread talking about it be having to bend certain tabs to replace it. I just want to fix it as it is the most annoying thing I've heard and felt lol

It could be the hanger is relaxing. It may be multiple joints are relaxing with age. The fit may not be just right, especially with after market parts. May be a little of everything. Even motor mounts or transmission mounts, a little here and a little there all adds up..

Sometimes a new hanger helps.

Sometimes the only solution is like mentioned, heat it up red hot and let it cool slowly so it relaxes in the proper position.

I've found, especially when replacing exhaust pieces, to stick that 3/4" piece of wood between the pipe and the cross member, while everything is loose but assembled, then tighten the flange and the clamps down. The rear hanger by the axle can also cause issues, the pipe gets a little twisted and/or the welded on hanger isn't just right and it may stress the exhaust downwards causing it to contact the cross member. The exhaust isn't built to close tolerances and little off on one end, is a lot on the other end.

Some after market down pipes (cross over pipes) come flattened on the bottom where it passes over the cross member. I had to heat mine (on my Renix) and flatten it myself to get it to fit and not bang on the cross member. No amount of adjustment or tweaking seemed to help, so I broke out the torch and hammer and made it fit.

It is a poor design and needed to be made with a little more clearance. I seem to remember some later models actually had a curved notch built into the cross member for clearance, but I may be getting this confused with another vehicle, Jeeps aren't the only thing I work on.

So little update, I had plan to get a rear exhaust hanger as mine didnt have one and would rattle on the gas tank skid so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and install it and bend the hanger rod on the crossmember so first I installed the hanger, which turned out to be a pain as the exhaust hung about 2" below the mount but wrestled it up and clamped it and it cured the rattle on the skid but noticed I didn't get any rattle on the crossmember also... So my question and guess is do you guys have a rear exhaust hanger on? Maybe that can fix it. I'm gonna drive it as is and see if it rattles anymore.
