Hi..

I 've been having this strange problem, when I make a sharp right u turn my engine will stutter like its starving for fuel. Left turns are fine and only happens when I am down to a quarter of gas
..just recently swaped out my fuel pump and had the same symptoms before and after the fuel pump was swaped..

Thank for all your help

Check to see if your powersteering pump is full or not. mine did that a few years ago and it was bone dry. Filled it up and no stall problems when I turned. Just and idea. Juice

My 98 does that too when I get down to around 2-3 gallons, sharp turns or going uphill will get the adrenal glands working right away as it cuts out. My sender is shot so I drive by trip meter. Someone must have reset it while I wasn't looking the first time it happened and I filled up I ignored it after that now that I know what it was. I always try to refill every 200 miles. It is not good to let it get that low, the gas flow is what cools the pump and if you run it low all the time the pump will get hot and overheat, does not take too many times before the pump cooks itself....

On 97+ models, this could be either of the 2 fuel filters inside the tank, or the combo fuel filter/regulator on top of the tank.

If anyone can find a way to replace any of these without mucho $$$, please let me know.

its not a fuel pump problem per sey, but it has to do with the baffles in the tank... almost all xjs do this when low on fuel.

Have you hit the tank 4wheeling? that can fawk up the baffles.

Another thing that it could be is the filter strainer that attaches to the bottom of the fuel pump. On ’96 and older XJs, the strainer can come off which leaves the gas inlet higher that it normally would be.
