I am replacing a bad motor in an 01 Cherokee. Can I replace with any year HO 4.0, or do I need to stick with 97+? Intake, header and accessories will be transferred to new motor.

Thanks
Theron

I think you can use 96+ motors but you will have to reuse the intake, header and accessories. 97+ is a little different then the older motors so just find a newer motor and safe some hassles

sorry im not too bright but id like to know the answer too. But do you mean your questioning as to wether or not you can take any year ho engine (more or less complete, with header etc) and swap it in for your bad motor? Or are you saying your planning on keeping the header etc from your bad motor and transferring them to your new lump?

lower end(block) yes,
top end(head and intake/exhaust/, yes/no/maybe.

it depends if your talking about a direct engine swap, a short block swap, or a long block swap.

it depends on what electronics/fuel injection(ecu-renix obd1, obd2) you use also

No the only years that will work are 2000 and 2001 because they are a non dizzy motor with the coil packs.

You can also look at TJ motors, but becareful because some of the bolt holes to mount the AC and Alternator can be different. I bought a '05 motor mor mine with only 25,000 on it and its not going to work without making custom brakets for my alternator and such.

The coil pack / dizzy issue can be worked around. The hole in the block is the same for the distributor or the Cam Position Sensor. The problem, which I believe Talyn has posted before, is the motor mount holes changed (IIRC). So acording to that, you need a '00 or '01 motor. And then the issue is that you don't want the 0331 head that comes on these.
