On the verge of buyin an 89 cherokee with the 4.0 in it. Its in great shape 120,000 on the engine but it has a knock in the bottom end so clearly i'm going to have to replace the engine. Just wanted to know what issues i may have with puttin the engine froma newer year in it to try and get some more power and fewer miles. Or if anyone has any suggestions for what engine to drop in it. The guy wants 1300 for it but with present problems i think thats too high any suggestions as well on a good price for it, interior is in great shape, new paint, 2" terafelx with bfg AT's and AR wheel. Thanks for any help.

Heres my issue i dont want to think its something minimal and buy it and have it die on me. How can i tell how serious it is or isnt. My dad has been a mechannic for longer than i've been alive and thas was his "educated guess" on the noise that was heard. The guy i'm buying it from is a big jeep guy and he seemed to think it was something as small as needing a new oil pump b/c the old one wasnt circulating the oil properly. Let me know what u think, thanks for the help

If it's not carring oil pressure and has a knock it's more than just a pump.
With the problems it;s not worth over $700.00 and thats high.

I was thinking of offering him 6-700 and i was really just planning on replacing the engine. Thanks for the help, any input as to if a newer 4.0l will work without having to change over a lot of stuff??
