thanks for the info/suggestions. i grabbed an extra fire extinguisher i had in the garage and popped it in the jeep "just-in-case".
turns out it was the relay located in front of the washer reservoir. i replaced it with a spare bosch 12v/20/30A one, and they work correctly, only with the low beams on.
any idea what the correct relay should be?
off topic.....are you from fresno? i lived there from 89-92.
