Elaborate for me, please.

Nothing wrong with GPS, until the batteries crap. Then you are generally screwed, as most GPSers that I have seen do not carry a map, and even fewer of them know how to use one for something other than scratch paper. And yes, I will be most happy to point you in the direction that you believe town is in, for a nomial fee of course (granted, I never said it was the CORRECT direction).

my list of "spares" that I take with me when I hit the trails includes a handfull of AA batteries (actually they are in the glove box at all times).

So far I really haven't used mine for hiking. I'm more interested in logging waypoints of where large trout that have been caught. Then I can keep data on the conditions of the day in the hopes of finding trends. Would have been great to plan trips for clients but I began to realize that I don't want to spend my days undoing knots created by people that have no business holding a fly rod.

By the way, the Toyota is STILL rice, as are all of the Asian motor vehicles (car, bike, truck, whatever...) to me anyway. As for the "domestic" vehicles that have all the spoilers, stickers and other assorted crap, those are nothing but wanna-be rice. I don't care HOW fast it suppossedly goes, or any of the "other" stuff these folks spew as fact, most of the ones around here do pretty much nothing but clog up the parking lots with their "instant nightclubs". Now, that being said, I guess we should play rice, I mean, nice, and accept the wonders of the global economy. As if that's ever gonna fully happen.

Ren, I hate to tell ya, but most of the "American" vehicles you see getting riced-out are probably "rice" to begin with - Dodge markets vehicles made by Mitsubishi, Ford/Mazda, and GM does some Suzuki, Toyota, and Isuzu - thanks to NUMMI (New United Motors, Inc.)

Wonders of the global economy...

Back in the day, my friends had Harleys, BSAs, Triumphs and Nortons. I bought a 71 Yamaha XS650. It (and vicariously, I) was labeled a ricer.
To the point that I remember leaving a local hangout and the morons poured a box of rice all over my bike. Funny schit.

So I would say that it is a derogatory label for an asian-market built vehicle for the last thirty years or so. It doesn't matter the heritage of the person behind the wheel, those remarks are pure ignorant and racist.

Flame on!!

I think rice is a mentality and has little to do anymore with particular countries, vehicle makes or anyone's ethnic background. Rice is a state of mind. Its "LOOK AT ME." Ricers want attention. This is expressed by certain behaviors such as modifying a vehicle in a way that draws the most looks, trying to impress people with a stereo and driving in an aggressive manner that irritates others. Rice is not buying a Honda because you like them and adding an intake because you want better performance. Rice is when this is done thinking that your social status will improve with each customization. This could be on any kind of vehicle but Japanese cars are trendy and thus the most popular with ricers.

Okay, two things real quick here:
1) When I stated "domestic" the quote marks were meant to denote rebadge or sister chassis to an Asian parent corp. Hell, I am not even sure if the Mustang is even strictly domestic anymore, as far as the actual chassis goes. Now an "american" vehicle is just that, stateside in all aspects, excepting the possibility of overseas marketing.
2) At least someone caught the part about the "parking lot nightclubs", and the related stuff.

And, I also agree that it's possible to "rice out" anything - I once saw a late-model Mustang with an automatic transmission that had a Monster Tach with shift light installed. What the Hell?!? Why for does one need a shift light (a functional shift light - I saw it light!?!) with an AOD transmission?

Not to split hairs here (because it was rice more than likely), but Shift Lights on automatics are not that uncommon in the drag racing arena. Full manual valve body would be one major reason for it. If you don't shift it, it doesn't shift. On mine I used a shift light to work the 2-3 shift, the 1-2 was better handled by the valve body (i'm just not fast enough).

Rice- japanese made vehicle

Ricer- Person that modifies thier vehicle to look like it's fast, as in all show and no go, or using parts that are useless on thier car but put on because a fast car has it, ie large spoiler. Addition of stickers, especially if the vehicle does not have the parts the sticker came from, is also Ricer. Same with rebadging a vehicle, fake BOV, fake nitrous purge.

Kinda like the differences between a rock crawler and a mall crawler.

You forgot to mention every piece of chrome available in the JCWhitney catalog. Well, except for the horns mounted on the hood. The horn under the hood plays their national anthem.

"Ricer," to me, is any Japanese car (whether it has a Japanese nameplate or a domestic one - a lot of Mitsubishis are overe here wearing MOPAR nameplate, for instance - and Mazdas under the Ford marque...) with goofy mods - like a beach towel rack on the decklid, and a batch of "Type R" tags all over (don't forget the coffee can exhaust tip, and cut springs are usually a dead giveaway - making it bounce more than a clown car.)

I don't have anything against a well-done modification - but I don't see a lot that are "well-done." The only "Low rider" I've liked, for instance, was the van in "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie." There was a concept that guided it, not just "how low can you go?" I don't limbo - neither will my car.

"Rice-burner" is just a generic term for any vehicle of Japanese manufacture - regardless of intent. A "rice-burner" can be any Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Acura, or whatever - Hell, we may as well throw in Hyundai and Daewoo (both Korean) and Kia (Pacific Rim somewhere...)

I agree with a "ricer" or "riced-out" being a vehicle that looks like a failed extre for "The Fast and the Furious," or that drove by the Sport Compact Tuner adverts section after being coated with Gorilla glue - most of them are just plain stupid.

Ricers are like low riders - they can be done well, but they're more commonly done badly. One of the most decent low riders I saw around here was actually done on a Yugo GV (huh?) - nicely done paint without being gaudy, rather understated "pulse" graphics, window tint sans bubbles, and a sound system whose main point seemed to be sounding decent, not registering on the seismograph at Fordham. Nice job - pity he didn't do it on something a little better. You can't polish a turd, you know...

A "concept" low rider can be cool, but a classic with drop spindles, drop airbags, and "scratch plates" is somewhere well to the left of stupid. Any vehicle lowered to the point where it can't handle kerbs and speed bumps is stupid (I once saw a "compact truck" that had been lowered - came into the apartment complex and ripped out the fuel tank on a speed bump. First time I'd seen a private individual have to fill out an EIS...)

Oh - isn't the Dodge Stratus really made by Mitsubishi? Some Dodges are - take the Neon, for instance. It's a Mitsu wearing Dodge brass, no more or less...

5-90

Not quite on the last ones there 5-90, the Stratus/Cirrus/Breeze 4drs and both generations of Neon were actual Chrysler/Daimler Chrysler Products. It does get a bit murky (sp?) since you could get a Mitsu built 2.5l V-6 in the Stratus/Breeze/Cirrus sedans, you could also buy a non turbo Mitsu Eclipse/ Eagle Talon with the Chrysler 2.0l from the Breeze and Neon, and then the Avenger/Sebring/Stratus Coupes were built in the Normal, IL Mitsu plant that build the Galant and Eclipe and had all the sexual harrasement problems. The current like of replacements for the above cars are pretty mixed up from what I understand, I guess the Caliber/Avenger/Sebring/Compass/Patriot are supposed to be sharing a platform with next Lancer and Hyundai is mixed in there somewere too.
