That pretty much says it. How do I tell if I have a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 rear axle on my '95 XJ? If Dana, is it c-clip or non? I looked at the diff when I first bought it, and it has Dana markings.

TIA,
fiz

Do you have ABS? If so, then it's a Dana 35. C-clip.

Or look at the diff cover. If it's flat at the bottom, then it's an 8.25.

But if it has Dana markings, I would say it's a Dana 35.

a '95 will have c-clips, it was late 80s when they started putting them in, the 8.25 is also a c-clip, but it is the small shaft 27 spline model, you can put the 29 spline shafts in, you just have to find them, i think www.4wd.com has them

The diff cover is also a good way to tell since it's either got the Chrysler Pentastar or the Dana Diamond-doodad

look on the webbing.. The dana will have 35C cast into it.
the 8.25 diff cover is oval where the 35 is round.
the bottom edge of the center section of a 8.25 has a very pronounced lip..you can see back of the the holes for the bottom cover bolts, where the 35 has 'blind" holes
..in other words, if you take out the very bottom bolt of a 8.25, you can see light through (as long as no silicone is plugging it) or poke a screwdriver all the way through.

I really need to get more sleep - I posted a hyperlink earlier to photos, but put it in image tags...so all we get is a nice red X. Sorry about that, check http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/gear1.html#axle for actual pictures.

Once again, if it's got ABS it's not going to be the 8.25" and either way the diff cover will have the manufacturer logo stamped into it.

Definitely a D35, then. Thanks again, guys!
