Difference in AW4 length

Been looking on here for a while but can't find anything on it. Does anyone know the measurements or can get the measurements for me? I'm looking to see the difference between a 2wd AW4 trans and a 4wd AW4 trans w/231. What I would need to know is the overall length from the bellhousing mounting point to the end of the output shaft. Planning on converting my 2wd project to 4wd but would like to know the difference so I know the length of driveshaft I need to order.

I haven't put that info in that thread because I don't know it yet - but I do have a 2wd auto RENIX sitting in the yard waiting to be converted to a V8 5 speed. Someone bug me Friday if I haven't measured and posted yet.

The info will change 95 down vs 96 up due to the tailcone design differences, I'll only be supplying the 95 down 2wd AW4 length measurement(s) and 4wd AW4 (minus NP231, trans housing only) measurement so someone else will have to measure their 96 up 2wd AW4 and 96 up + 95 down NP231 lengths to fill out the complete table.

when it comes to drive shaft length i wouldn't order it till i measured after everything was installed. Also you should be able to get the rear drive shaft from a aw4/231 / what ever rear end you have and it should work perfectly.

Yah that's where the problem lies, I'm across the country from my jeep and will be for the next few months. It has to be a custom built driveshaft as it's going in the cheromanche I've been slowly working on. Right now it's got a 2wd trans in it but I'm going to swap it over to 4wd when I get the driveshaft built. I know with the 2wd trans the driveshaft has to be 90" I'm trying to figure out how much of a length difference there is from the 2wd output shaft end to the 4wd w/231 output shaft. This way I can just subtract the extra length from the shaft and not have to worry about getting it shortened and throwing it out of balance it will be done right the first time.

The driveshaft being at an angle to the tcase is gonna throw your numbers off by quite a bit - I honestly wouldn't order without measuring the assembled truck.

On a traditional 1 piece style shaft that would be the case. But with it being a 2 piece shaft with a carrier bearing the only thing that will change will be the length from output shaft to carrier bearing mount, the back half will remain the same.

oh, you have it set up with the carrier bearing so the first section of the shaft is perfectly parallel with the transmission output shaft? OK you're definitely right in that case.

I will try to remember to crawl under the truck and measure tomorrow.
