Out there.
George W. Romney, was president of AMC for the company's first 8 years? I definitely didn't. I randomly stumbled across this fact and was pretty surprised. Is this common knowledge or are some of you surprised too?

I guess ya learn somethin new everyday.

Not that this will affect my vote or anything :D

I'm gonna go ahead and blame him for RENIX and the usage of the 2.8L V6 and vote against him on that alone.

 Wonderful. That 2.8L is something else. The factory fix for piston slap was to knurl the piston skirts...really!

that can't have ever caused any cylinder wall scuffing, nope.

GM... :twak:

Why would it? I've seen knurled pistons run - aluminum alloy is softer than grey iron, right?

(EDIT - Not to say that the V6-173 isn't a pile of shite anyhow. Best "upgrade" for the engine? Replace it with a 3.1 or 3.4 - both are markedly superior.)

The 3.4 in my last company car was still a loud, gutless, thrashy pile of shite.

Ken, I like you even more now! :roflmao:

I owned pax cars with 2.8L and 3.1L at the same time.

The 2.8L was a laggard, sorta ran (idled well!) and would change its own oil (I just topped it up once a fortnight and changed the filter every six months.) Damned thing wouldn't even get out of its own way.

The 3.1L was in a vehicle that was 500-600# heavier, much perkier, and the oil actually lasted long enough for me to actually change it all at once, instead of constantly topping it off.

(I never could get that damned oil leak fixed on the 2.8L - no matter how much I tried. I just recently found out about a TSB from AMC on that - same leak, at where the valve cover, cylinder head, and intake all come together. Their solution was to gouge out the surfaces where it all comes together to have a groove, then daub in a batch of RTV to fill the grooves and create a "fluid lock." I never thought of that - but I was usually in a hurry...)
