Rear Detroit for a c8.25. It's actually a true trac for 3.55 and down. Got the axle for free with 29spline shafts. Yesterday. It started grinding while turning..feels as if its literally grinding metal on metal.
Pulling the locker tomorrow to have it inspected but what could it be? It's not the pinion or inner bearings as I've checked. Pulled cover tonight. And it's only when I turn right under power?

Probably rounded off the edges on the engagement splines. Happened on an Aussie of mine, sent the whole locker back and they sent me a whole new side... then I sold it and welded my 29 spline...

Hmm..

Gonna call and see about a warranty bu I won't lie to get it. I got this axle 2nd hand so idk what it's been through. If they won't warranty it, hen ill replace it.

Ya I'm only on 31s and only have daily driven on it. But the case is etched from 04 so its 8 years old..it coul of been through hell & back by now.

It amazes me these fail, I've know people that buy them third and fourth hand. And literally have been to hell and back, without failure. I wonder if it was more like a bad setup, maybe the tolerances were to tight?

Ive broken 2 of them. when you break a shaft it kinda shock loads the detroit and takes out internal parts with them.

I don't think I will ever run one again.

Idk honestly what went wrong. I've only had the axle for a short period of time. I've not been rough or even wheel it yet. But the locker is almost a decade old.
Ill see what I can find out. I already sold my 8.8 I had built to:doh:
Probably going no fix this axle, get it ll set back up and test it then throw it up for sale.

Obviously it wouldn't be warranty, but I knew that. And I haven't found the parts to fix it. Dropping it at a shop today to see what they can do, if not then ill just replace the whole locker.
Should know for sure by Friday what's up with it. Sucks because I was going to karma this back out in socal once this 44 is finished. It was karma'd to me for nothing. Ill probably fix it and sell it. A 44 is finding its way under my jeep. I loved the 8.8 but its still a c-clip and I got more than I ever thought I would.

If the locker housing is not damaged then it can be fixed with new drive plates but it has been my experience that once the locker has had an axleshaft failure, all of the internal parts will fail due to minute cracks. For the cost I would trash the detroit, install a grizzly (if Yukon has them out yet) or a selectable and call it done. Or if you have a 44, just karma the axle as is and let the person who gets it find a locker for it.

Not even close

Huh? Is it not a detriot? i got it for free on karma so i posted a pic and let everyone else tell me what it was lol. they said detriot? I thought it was a locker but shop told me trutrac:wierd:
shop says the locker would need to be replaced..John do you have a link to those plate deals? They say they can't be replaced, the locker itself would need to be done.

a truetrac is a gear driven limited slip like a torsen. They are made like a fine watch with a bunch of helical cut gears inside.

that looks like a no spin, or a full case detroit locker.

If you take some overall pictures of the carrier someone can probably help you identify it, then you can find the parts for it.

trutrac:

Proper detroit/no spin:

Is it not a DETROIT truetrac?

thats like saying a Cherokee and a Wrangler are the same because they're both Jeep.

Detroit is the brand.

no spin is the mechanical locker

trutrac is the mechanical LSD.

they share no parts and nothing in common other than a brand name.

What he's got there is a Detroit Nospin, or the original Detroit Locker.

I knew it was the damn locker because it would ratchet lol. Should of stuck to my instinct.
Well ill let John reply. If I can buy the disks separate then I will or the whole lockers getting replaced and axle sold in SoCal section. I'm tossing in a d44 with an Aussie and disks.

Your unit is a locker, not a truetrack. The parts can be bought from a Eaton distributor. I happened to find the drive plates for a D30 by searching for the part number for the replacement parts. It just happened that Summit had the replacement part. It was a close call for me to spend the money on the replacement parts because they were expensive and in the long run it failed again so if I had it to do again I would have just spent the extra mopney to get a Grizzly to begin with.
