If you are talking about the Deer valley trail that go's from HWY 88 to HWY 4 I know the HWY 4 side is closed to "wheeled vehicles" from HWY 89 to Bear valley Ski Resort in the winter.
I am talking about that trail.....and my understanding is that Hwy4 and the Sonora pass both get closed at "first snow" to allow Cal-trans the option for not plowing...but if we drop in off of 88....we should be good right?
Not sure. The trail starts at the Twin Lakes camp ground so I am not sure if they gate that off in the winter. If you could get to it from 88 you wouldnt be able to go all the way to 4. The hwy 4 side is desigated for snow mowbiles only and the fine is $500.00 ( ask me how I know) if you get cought on that portion of Hwy4.
we have a few snow runs in the winter. Usually starting at Malakoff Diggins State Park and running up to Bowman lake and over to I-80 if conditions permit. If you're looking for something a little closer to Reno, starting at Jackson Meadow resevoir and heading towards Bowman lake would be a good ride too.
You know honestly i don't think we ( my TJ owning buddy and I) care....we just want something fun...and challenging...do you have any dates planned? Would you/your group mind if we tagged along? Thanks!

I usually start the trail in Nevada City off of Northfield Rd, but it is pretty mild so starting directly at Malakoff Diggins isn't a bad idea unless you have the deep snow we did last year and only made it 1/4 to 1/2 mile past MD. Hopefully we can get a run in early in the season before too much snow is built up.
Jason, for the Jackcon Meadow to Bowman snow run you would take hwy 89 North from 80 and start JM where the Fordyce trail ends right? I remember leaving the Fordyce trail last year heading towards MD and making it back to 80 towards Sac. Might have been quicker to just hit 89 back to 80. I was on dirt roads for over a hour before hitting 80 again. That after the 19 hr Fordyce run, it was a fun day. :laugh3:
