I was enjoying a Heath Klondike bar in the driveway this evening while watching my dog and something occured to me: Dogs can't spit. Sure they can hack up something but that's not really spitting. Ya know when we get something in our mouths that we don't like...we spit it out. Dogs just don't have that luxury. We eat something that tastes like sh!t...we spit it out. A bug or hair gets in...we spit it out. My dog was chewing on a hunk of bark tonight and it actually got stuck in her back teeth. She just opened up her mouth real wide. The wood just kinda hung there (b/c it was stuck on her tooth).
And then it hit me...could this be why dogs eat poop? It gets in their mouth and they can't spit it out. We just pass judgement and assume they're gross for eatin' poop but MAYBE...that dog is sayin'..."Oh dude....this tastes like absolute sh!t....yet I am unable to get it out of my mouth. I guess I'll just go through the motions and eat this sh!t." I personally have witnessed the shear satisfaction that my dog gets from a good peanut butter in the Kong snack and it is not even close to the expression she displays when I bust her eating poop. Maybe she's just innocently nosing around the yard thinkin'..."I wonder if THIS is peanut butter?"
However....I am not able to put the mystery together why she continues to go back for more with the a$$ and cookie lickin'. Possibly....what tastes good to us does not taste good to them? Could it be that her a$$ and cookie tastes like peanut butter?
I can't imagine my life without my dog.
Just kinda thinkin' outloud here. Discuss.
