Death wobble after hitting pot hole

ok im going to have to look at the youtube vids, because i didnt see anything seriously obvious at all. I mean ALL of the bushings on the TRE's are dry and cracked, but no movement in them that I could see.

The TRE's don't really have bushings per se... they're ball and socket type joints. The boot around them is probably dry and cracked. Do you regularly grease the 7-points in your front end that have grease fittings? If that boot is cracked and you don't, it's quite possible the TRE's are worn out.

For dry and cracked bushings I was referring to the lower control arm bushings and upper control arm bushings.

All of the above can cause death wobble. I had the same problem, couldn't really tell what was bad so I replaced a bunch of things I knew were old as both preventative maintenance and to fix the death wobble.

WRONG.

The manufacturer DID NOT put stabilizers on MILLIONS of vehicles to make them "look tough" or for any other reason than to mechanically aid the steering/suspension of the vehicle.

Vehicles that came from the factory, without stabilizers, often need the addition of stabilizers after "mods"--different wheels, tires, lifts, etc., or even the USE of the vehicle--our early Chevy kill trucks required DOUBLE STABILIZERS on them due to the weight of the boxes, water tanks, generator, extra winches, and swinging meat.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts Joe.

@ SneakyJap - I dare you to take your stabilizer off and run it @ 55 mph. You'll have to have your seats cleaned......

I think we should just let this die and only help the OP.No reason for folks to get all upset for some silly crap.Use the block if you don't want to read his writing or what ever you call it now..

Thank God i have money so i can pay to have my stuff worked on and driven by somebody else.;)

Sorry, just had to get that out.I'm done

I haven't run a steering stabilizer since around 2006. Haven't missed it one bit and I don't plan on putting it back on.

As stated death wobble is normally associated with out of balance tires and loose or worn steering and suspension parts. The best way to check it is to have someone move the steering wheel side to side while you watch for loose parts. Just have them wiggle the steering a bit. Any loose parts may contribute to the problem. If in doubt, check another XJ and see how much movement is present and compare it to yours.

thanks for all the advice gents! I just bought the jeep about a year ago, and hadnt been driving it much since i still had my 05 f150. Now that I traded that in for a car for the fiance/baby, the jeep is now my DD.

SO, i havnt greased anything at all in the front end. im thinking of doing what jonner did and replace all the UCA and LCA bushings as well as the TRE's and hopefully that will fix things.

I miss having the lift at the auto hobby shop on base! lol

ok, so looking on rockauto, it looks like they have :

(moog)

Front left inner, front left outer and front right inner TRE's, all about 24 bucks. this is what I need, correct?

Sorry for the newb questions guys, im not used to SFA's, im used to IFS setups.

Yes those are the tre you need. I forgot how cheap rock auto is. And if you plan to replace UCA and LCA may wanna look into aftermarket arms, you can pick them up used fairly cheap or new for a little bit more. I only suggest this because the stock arms are weak and the newer aftermarket ones use poly bushing, unless you get ones with johnny joints.

A couple thoughts here:
1) What's your budget? If you don't want to chase down individual problems and instead would like to refresh the front end, maybe look at updating the TRE's and UCA'S and LCA'S to newer parts. Keep in mind this can turn into a real project with broken bolts depending on if you live in the rust belt (a saw zaw and angle grinder can come in handy).

2) Do you wheel? If yes, then maybe follow Sneakyjap's suggestion and pick up some aftermarket UCA's and LCA's. I think this is your daily driver. I was in the same boat with my DD, and didn't want anything greater than reliable parts so I went with Moog replacements off Rock Auto.

3) If budget isn't too much of a concern and you are interested in improving steering feel, look into the V8 tie rod upgrade. I think it ran me $150 in parts and now I have a solid tie rod. Again for a daily driver, improved steering feel is nice to have (if it's in the budget).

Let me see if I can look up some part #'s for you tomorrow and help you with which route I went. I only replaced the LCA's last year, but now I'm going to have to replace the UCA's this year. Figure out the scope of this project and if you want to do a 50% refresh, 100% refresh, or simply replace only pairs of worn out parts.

Wow, thank you soo much Jonner, Ill have to figure out the budget, money is a little tight right now with the newborn and wedding coming up!

100%refresh is a good idea IMO, as i have no idea the last time any of this stuff was replaced. Just might have to do one or two things at a time

well gents, got in the jeep after work, went to leave the parking lot, turned the jeep left, and it started hopping, almost like it does with the highway speed deathwobble, but in a slower fashion. What gives?! lol. I havnt had the time to do anything other than do a quick once over on everything as ive been working 12's the last few days. Hopefully sometime in the next few days!

thats what i figured, i wasj ust hoping it was the same problem as the deathwobble. Money is a little tight for the next month or two until i start getting my GI bill money for school, so replacing a ton of stuff on the jeep isnt in the budget right now, but we will make it work! thanks again guys
