Nice job on the paint. The white definately came out better than the black. Did you really rattle-can it? That's a great job if you did. Also... how many cans did you use if you did? I want to do something similar and repaint mine this summer. Could you perhaps write a little write up on your painting process? What you used etc...Thanks a lot and excellent job! It's looking great.

i used about [probably] 9 cans of krylon semi-flat white paint. i sanded the HELL out of the body. primed it [with autozone paint primer, one light coat]. then applied the pain under a tarp [that was open at each end, and i used a gas mask lol] i did an entire coat very lightly so it looked like i had just sprayed a tiny bit on, to give it a better adhesive surface. then, i sprayed another layer a bit thicker, but still not quite there. and let that all dry. then i applied the last coats, carefull not to focus on one area too much...
though with semiflat, you dont have to worry as much about striping.

also, start and end off of the surface. if you start by spraying ON the surface, you get a thicker focal point. if you start off of it and end off of it, the coat is more even.

Ok thanks! So it only took 9 cans for the entire Jeep? About how much did it end up costing in materials if you don't mind me asking? How long did you wait in between coats? I take it semi-flat is not as dull as just flat? Would I need to clear coat it as well once the semi-flat is on or whatever paint I use?

Looks good, I also have an 88' XJ with 4.0L auto and dana 35. Thsi is my first jeep and I plan on painting it all flat black or OD green. What kind of paint did you use?

eh. i said AROUND nine lol. i tried to keep track, but all my math skills are focused on integrals and derivations right now [calc II] ha ha. naw, but it was probably around nine to ten. however, thats with NO wind. with wind youll probably need more due to the loss of spray.

between coats i waited about 10 mins after the first. then about 2-3 hours after the second. the rest i just did until i felt comfortable.

i WILL be getting a clearcoat on it. whether professional or personal [i dont trust myself with clearcoat...] but it protects it from running in the rain -given that it IS only spray paint...

yea, semi-flat is just not as flat as flat and not as glossy as gloss or semi gloss [kind of like partly cloudy and mostly sunny, you know] it doesnt streak as much, and looks MUCH better than flat. and i just think gloss paints have no business being rattle canned on.. if you want glossy paint clearcoat or get a real paintjob..

materials id say: well lets see
autozone krylon semiflat white= ~5.00 per can. @ 10 cans is 50 bucks.

not bad for a paint job [mind you i had ALL the sand paper, tape, newspaper/lawn bags, already so i didnt need to buy them as well.

when painting, let the ones not being used sit in warm/hot water, it evens out the paint inside the can, and frees it from settling.

Thanks, that helps and makes me a little warmer inside I can paint my Jeep and not cost me an arm and a leg to do so and then have the wife get mad... I'll most likely do it partially in a garage. Have half of it in and what not... because I don't think it will fit with all the crap in there!

if you do, unless its an outside garage, make sure you spray for a couple mins and have a large fan air it out, then spray, then air, etc.

your house will be FILLED with paint fumes, and your wife will be even MORE mad lol

It's not my garage... it's my mother in-law's ... I'll definately have some fans in there so I don't stick up the house and make it toxic! I'll definately post pics up when i do it. Not sure when i'll start though. Going camping/off-roading this weekend and do some Western Festival gun slinging thing in Idaho City. Then next weekend going to Hagerman, ID with my wife and some friends for camping and off-roading and going to a place called City of Rocks... supposedly has 60 story rock formations or something crazy like that. I plan on re-painting the bumpers as well cuz they are looking like poo and scratched up all over.

What grade sand paper would you suggest if i'm just basically getting off the clear coat to paint?
My Jeep is burgundy, if I were to do it a lighter color will I need to primer it up or no? And did you hand sand it or use one of those little corded hand held ones? Thanks again!

for sand paper, it you want to go fine, not TOO fine...but just enough so you only take the clear coat off. if you go all the way down to metal, youll have to re-prime.

no, youll probably be able to have the white on top of the burgundy. when you start, just try it in one area and see how it looks.
