d60 gear setup questions, need help

so i am yanking out a yucon spool out of my front dana 60 & replacing it with a detroit locker.
when measuring the gear mounting flange to the bearing seat of the two carriers there is approx. .187" difference in them. WTF do i do now?
there is nowhere enough shims between the bearings to shift the carrier that far. i could possibly cut that amount off the back of the ring gear on my lathe if the steel is soft enough to cut. can someone clue me in to what is going on here?

Yup, you got the wrong carrier for your gearset.
From the sounds of it (you said you could take material off the ring gear) you got a Detriot for the 4.56+ gears but your gears are really the thick version designed for a 4.10- carrier.

i think you are right.
are the gears soft enough to turn on the lathe or are they hardened too much on the backside?

buy the right locker. or the right gear set. if you want to try and lathe the ring gear, have at it. but you might need to also concern yourself with ring gear bolt hole depth. Not to mention a .002 (or more) variation (run out) can be bad or very bad, depending on how good that detroit is to start with. You might end up with .004 (or more) run out and backlash difference with only a .002 ring gear run out.

I say just buy the right gears, and sell the ones you have now or ask where ever you bought them, for a exchange.

PS...
Quality gears are 8620 heat treated / hardened

i turned the ring gear on my lathe. it took a bit over 4 hours & sucked major ass, but i got the dimensions nearly perfect & ended up with .008" backlash. i never want to do that again. these gears were in the heep when i bought it & i got the locker new in the box from a guy who won it at top truck challenge so i couldn't just return it.
