I hope I don't get in trouble for double posting...I put this in the modified tech forum but have no response in 12 whole hours LOL.

I have searched for a while but can't find the answer I'm looking for.

I have an AW-4 from a 1990 XJ. I has a 21 spline output (counted it 4 times now) so I know I need a 21 spline input shaft for my D-300...I plan to get it from Novak along with the clock/spacer ring.

On Novak's site it says there should be a 23 spline output (later models) that is about 1/2" extended from the tailhousing. OR a 23 or 21 spline (mine) output that is flush.

Well my 21 spline out put sticks out 1/2" or so from the tailhousing.

I sent Novak an e-mail but figured I might get something here before they respond.

What is the question? I do remember reading that there are 2 lengths to the out puts. Not sure though if that is for the 21 and the 23 though.

You mean you want me to actually ask a question? :)

It is to my understanding the 21 spline output on the AW-4 is supposed to be flush...mine is not. So I want to be sure I don't have the 1 out of a million trannies that's different before I order my 21 spline input shaft for my D-300. I REALLY want to get the MJ 4wd so I can start doing more than drive it.

So my question is...is the moon made of margarine...or real butter?

My real question is am I worried for nothing on this output shaft length?

My AA swap guid says that:

"We have seen the AW4 automatic transmission in both long 21 and 23 spline."

Worse case you will have to cut it off...

I was wondering on that. I guess it's not much different than cutting the shaft on a t-case for a hack n tap sye.

you can use a spacer as well, if you dont want to cut it. i am using about a 3/4" spacer (its actually the tail portion of an aw4 cut off, so it is a perfect fit). I did this to mate my klune up the the aw4, since it had the long output as well.

I went ahead and ordered the spacer/clock ring from Novak along with the 21 spline input for the D-300.

My main concern is making sure the input shaft on the t-case goes far enough into the tail of the trans so it doesn't leak tranny fluid everywhere.
