When it comes to cutting, take it cautiously. Because the spring rate goes up quickly the difference between 1 coil and 1.5 coils can be the difference between a firm but not jarring ride and one that is too stiff and jarring. Then you have a set of springs that have virtually no value unless you find an extremely heavy XJ.

that's kinda were I was going with the trial do1 coil install measure, go from there.
 
Yep. Spring rate will go up a lot.

Using a cutoff wheel to cut springs is perfectly safe. I'm not particularly worried about messing up the temper on the last 1/16" of spring.
