Cut Lower Rear Quarters...(pics and write-up)

Well I will bring this back to life yet again. I loved this mod on mine and Iam helping a friend build an 85 and we are doing his tomorrow

I just did it yesterday in prep for the bumper I'm building.
No pics but, it looks just like the rest of the rigs here that have done it, just in a red 2 door flavor. It was worth the hour I spent doing it.

all i gotta say, is do it right! i did it early on, and love how it looks... but now that im into cage work and all the interior is out, theres a couple mean cracks, and ripped appart spot welds, from me not doing it properly.

what did you do wrong? is this write up pretty dead on? I am looking to do this on my 01. Can you include pics on the damage your talking about? also what kind of wheeling do you do?

the writeup is close enough to figure the missing/vague pieces out. it really is stupid easy. I used a cutoff wheel and a floor jack and the fattest self tappers i could find with a generous amount of slicone. I do plan on welding them eventually unless a cage happens sooner.

Does anyone else have any feedback on this mod? I'm thinking about doing it to clear my 37's on my 2 door with an interior D & C cage. I hit this area alot when wheeling on the Con/Fordyce and think that cutting it would be a good idea if I can do it clean and not cut anything structural.

Big red, First off your red rig looks freaking sweet. I also have a 2dr on 35's running a full cage. I cut my rear quarter panels and also cut out my rear wheel wells. When designing the cage I incorporated a 3/8 plate reinforcement for the loss of structural support. Anyway, with the quarter panels a sawzall with new blades would work, but i used a jigsaw and it makes it look 10 times better. With all the extremely added support of a full cage none of these mods have made any difference in the flex of my body or anything structual, and I have zero rubbing, even at full flex. If you think it looks good and will help, do it. With a cage you have no worries what so ever. Good luck!

When I did mine I out a liberal ammount of silicone inbetween each section, then I used a self tapping screw to pull everything together tight, then welded it.

when I did my buddies we just cut folded and riveted

I used this write up a few months ago, worked out great for me. I just riveted and sealed it up but I may go back and weld it sometime.

im sure its been brought up multiple times in this thread, but 13 pages is a lot to get through....does anybody have the patience to tell me what is under that magical box on the drivers side? How do you cut and fold with all of that stuff there?

That would be your gas tank filler lines. Remove the shield, do the fold, and then modify shield to fit. IIRC

laziness. hoses that magically carry fuel from the gas pump to the gas tank. :compwork:

Had to bump the thread to say thanks, the info was very helpful. I didn't trim as high up, stopped right at the inner wheel well sheetmetal. None the less i'm very happy with what I gained from such an easy mod.

i would just like to say i really like this mod, but what is everyone doing for bumpers to cover the extra material behind the shackle but still take advantage of the clearance gains by angling the edges of the bumper up wards?
