Cummins 5.9

I emailed Jeff from the website listed in this thread, he said they do not recommend swapping 4bts into XJs because the vibrations are awful with the unibody.

Id still do it.

If you really want a diesel, think about a 6.2 from a Chevy/GMC. People say they are crap, I had one for 2 years in a 3/4 ton and it had plenty of power for it, it would proabbly make an XJ move pretty good. Same motor mounts as a SBC. Cooling may be the only issue though. Much cheaper than buying a 4bt. I just sold the truck this week, if I had the space, I would have loved to have put the drivetrain in my '73 CJ-6, it would be different, that's for sure.

And IIRC Banks made a Stinger package for the 6.2 that would add a turbo and get it into the same league as the 6.5

EDIT:Found it, it's the Banks Sidewinder turbo kit.

http://bankspower.com/products/show/156/11

Claims up to 60 hp and 110 lb-ft of torque with 19% better mpg.

From what I have heard on the diesel sites is that a 6.2 with a Banks turbo is more powerful than a 6.5 turbo. I sold a used 6.2 Banks setup last year for $1000 in the first few days I had in a Craigs List. It came on a parts rig I got and I didn't use my truck enough to warrant not get $1000 cash for it. It looked like a nice set up.

5.9 is way too heavy. 975lbs without flywheel. Had a 93 1ton dodge with the 5.9. Had aftermarket turbine housing and tweeked the pump. Loved the truck and the cummins power is by far the best let alone the great fuel mileage and they last FOREVER. The 5.9 will tie a ton truck in a knot so it would take some major work to make an xj even hold the weight let alone handle the power and the cummins shake. Anythings possible tho!
