What the hell dont you guys get all I want is answer to god damn question and you get so caught up in telling what you think I should here telling me I need lower gears does not answer my fawking questions do you actaully read my questions or do you just have to big of an ego so all you can come up with is why you think it happend without looking at it I know exactly what happend so if you dont want to answer my question along with a flame DONT RESPOND!!!

AZboy,

You get flamed for shet like this! Come on read your own posts they are so antagonistic it's not even funny.

I still want to see the pictures, then I can tell you the bolts only were a small factor in why your shaft broke exactly where I told you it was broken before you opened you case. :D

AZman....

here's a little "REAL" theoretical info for you to digest, that *may* help you see why you are getting so much flak for having been so outspoken about running tall gears......remember we all said there was a risk of drivetrain failure.....please understand that none of us would ever wish any bad stuff on you or your rig, but we're all having a tough time resiting the urge to say

"i told you so"......

Believe me, this is all good natured ribbing....yer gonna get this stuff until you take care of your gears! we have your best intere3st in mind!

okay, here's the deal:

if you assume that there is a 2000 foot-pount rotational load on your rear axle (at the tires) your driveline is going to feel only a portion of this load.

HOW MUCH DEPENDS ON YOUR GEAR RATIO!

assuming the 2000 foot-pound load, all things being the same except for gear ratio, your gear ratio of 5.13 would deliver 389.8 foot pounds through the yoke, the u-joints, all the way through the mainshaft of your t-case. With your gear ratio of 3.55, the torque load is 563.38 foot pounds!!! that is an effective increase of 145% !!!

you can reduce the amount of load placed on your driveline by installing numerically higher gears.

If you think that a gear job is too expensive, have you ever heard of the phrase "the poor cannot afford to be cheap"???? by not properly gearing your rig, you might have "saved" money up front, but know you have to pour a good portion of what it would have cost into a REPAIR job, and you are still in the same place you started! There is a strong possibility that this breakage could have been avoided with the proper gearing....

A lot of folks think that "proper gearing" is for configuring rpm/mph performance, but driveline service life is just as important of a consideration, and it is often over looked.....

best regards

LOL. Hinkley you made another friend. :)

I think we need another thread about how cool the hack & tap kits are. I'm not trying to throw salt in the wound, but people on here ask a question, get the answer they dont want cause it's more expensive, and rather than listen to the advice they asked for they take the cheap way out & break later. :wierd: Sucks to buy things twice, I should know it took me a long time to learn.
:worship:

Flamed? If you don't like smoke in your eyes, then don't douse yourself with gas.........and wander over to the fire!

It's all in the approach, dude.
Blaming the H&T for your breakage is like yelling at a cop for writing you a ticket for speeding.......when you were.

For the most part, folks here want to help out others from making costly mistakes......especially those of us that have felt the $$$ pains of taking some budgetary shortcuts. Some are just jerks by nature.:dunno: And your past history on the gear issue was added to the "pile" again, sorry if you got some boo-boo's.

Actually the reason I got the hack and tap had nothing to do with the cost it actually cost me a little more than it would have with the AA route at the time I wasent confident in taking apart the T-case.

I understand completely, and for complete clarity.....you are being used as an object lesson for other's.....don't take it too personally, we've all been there at one time or another.

Actually, I was plenty confident about taking it apart...

...it was GETTING IT BACK TOGETHER I HAD DOUBTS ABOUT!!! :laugh2:

My hack and tap has served me well for a year or so, but it still emits a 'hum' over 80 or so. I plan on replacing it with a HD unit or a new case now that I am more adept at such things.
My main reason for moving away from the hack and tap is that I am moving to lower gears. The driveshaft will be spinning much faster for each given speed, and I fear that the 'hum' will turn into a 'moan', and that is no good for anyone.
PM me and I will give you a great deal on a '99 231`with a hack and tap and a matching RE driveshaft.
Good luck.

Strange thing.

Just took out my front driveshaft for double cardan maintenence. I have had it out before, but never on the freeway. 85 mph with no vibes at all. This means that my hack and tap is just fine, and all my 'hum' was coming from the front double-cardan joint.
Count one vote for the ole' H&T.
Merry X-Mas.
Hasta.
