basically i was driving and suddenly i didnt have a clutch anymore what was weird is as far as i know my clutch was working just fine there was no signs of it slipping or anything i was just driving home from work and it just stopped working there was no noises that were made and no signs of it about to do anything it felt normal

at first we thought it was the slave cylinder but after getting down and taking stuff apart all the hydralics appear to be working properly so now we dont know what it is but we figure it has to be something with the throwout bearing, clutch plate something along those lines

the point is its gotta be fixed and with the cold weather finally here and limited space in the garage i cant decide if i want to have a couple of my neighbors over and try to tackle it ourselves or else im going to need to take it to a shop so i was gonna get on here and ask you guys if there was any good shops around westminster/arvada/broomfield/denver you recommended and if based of my discription on what happened if anybody has an idea as to what broke

thanks

What year is it? Does it have an external or internal slave? Was the fluid low after it happened? Is the clutch pedal flopping with no pressure?

Yeah, what Rick said........ you guys gotta remember to give us your XJ's "vital statistics" when you post up about problems.

If you have hydraulic pressure at the pedal - meaning that it isn't flopping loose, it's still got foot pressure when you press it down, then it's likely the clutch parts themselves.

If you're not hearing any rotational noises, grinding or other noises, then it's likely that the clutch material simply got thin enough that it no longer grabs. Or you may have a new oil leak that has contaminated the clutch and flywheel allowing it to slip.

It's possible that the pressure plate is bad, but generally when those go bad, there's some noise or at least a different feel to the clutch pedal - not as hard to press down.

Chain stores are the devil! Sorry, just had to spit that out.

I can't afford shop rate, so I work on my own.

How much collective clutch experience does your group have? The only problem I can caution on is getting the flywheel to the machine shop. You might have only a half day on Saturday if it needs resurfaced.

Just to throw in a note from the 94 FSM (external clutch, AX15 5spd,) the flywheel isn't resurfaceable. IIRC, from when I did the clutch on mine several years ago, a new one wasn't all that expensive. Autozone shows 4 different flywheels, ranging from $60 to $240.
