I have a corneal disease called Keratoconus. Basically it's a progressive thinning and distortion of my corneas. It appears to have stabilized but the topic of doing transplants is on the table. I hate to tell you this but it is not a quick and easy process. They would do one eye at a time. Each eye could take up to a year to fully heal. Though corneal rejection is not common, it is a risk. The good news is, the cornea heals very well. I had a corrosive chemical splashed in an eye about 2 years ago. My cornea was literally burned but it healed 100% Good luck.

Yah - as I said, I can handle academic research without any trouble (I know about risks of rejection, having to only do one eye at a time - fortunately it's only one - corneal lacerations can heal and cause astigmatism, ...) but I was looking for anecdotal information - which I'm getting here and there.

Oh - and JFTR, I don't wear safety glasses. They fog up over my regular spectacles. Thus - the Full Face Shield! Looked silly, and I caught Hell from other students at DAC - but I didn't get hollered at by the instructors, and I always wore it. Always. Always, while out in the shop, that is.

I've got two hanging on a peg in the garage so I've got a spare if I manage to bugger one up seriously.

Torch work? I've got a full face and OA goggles for that as well. In HS Metal Shop years ago, I was showing one of the other kids how to strike an arc (old Lincoln stick machine) with the power off, and he forgot to tell me he had decided to do it for real. He stepped on the pedal and struck without telling me.

I was only two feet awa from him - when I went back through the curtains, I did so holding on to the back of his collar to make sure to break the arc (so no-one else would be blinded) and yanked him right off his feet. Lost vision for not quite a week, and I've been sensitive to light ever since. Fortunately, I'm a night critter.

I may not be his father (wife's kids from previous marriage,) but I'm doing my damned best to be a good dad - which is all that can be asked for. As far as I'm concerned, he's my son. Both of them are. That's enough for me.
 
my nephew has had 7 or 8 transplants now. his eye keeps rejecting the new cornea, he used to wait quite a long time for one, but now they have a pretty good stock pile in the bank, The last was only a couple of days wait. It is also just outpatient surgery. pretty amazing stuff, Good luck with your situation. i hope it all goes good and happy holidays

If he's got a Hx of transplant rejection of donor tissue, you may want to look into synthetic corneas - found them while I was doing quick academic research. Ask your opthalmic surgeon about it.
 
Was hoping to tell you something you didn't know Jon but I see you found out about the artificial corneas before I could post it. My neighbor who is a welder got some slag in his eye and thats what they gave him and he is doing well. Hope your son heals well and needs nothing but at least now you know about this newer technology.

Thanks. Yep - got good at research in high school when I was on the "Speech" team - did debate and extemporaneous speaking.

Debate relies upon researching both sides of a topic. Extemp would be you go in, get an envelope with two index cards in it. One has your topic - you have five to ten minutes to do research. The other is for organising your speech. Three to five minutes.

Yep - you get good at research that way!
