Cool CL find

Was browsing the "Tools" section and came across this nifty old tire machine and got it for $120. (Auto Bayz went outta business and I was getting tired of paying the Firestone around the corner $7 + tax a tire to dismount)

It uses an air ram to break the beads, then you use a bar to manually pull the tires off the rim. Used it this afternoon and it works pretty slick!

Unfortunately, it's old enough that most vehicle tires/wheels weren't bigger than 15" and 8" wide..... the bead breaker arm was maxed out trying to get it over the 235/75/15 tire. But it suits my needs for my little parts operation!

Rather than bolt it to the floor, I'll probably make a couple of metal foot plates that extend from the base so I can stand on 'em to keep the thing from spinning when I'm using the bar to remove the tires.

Could you extend those arms to help allow it to fit better? like those flat straps just get longer ones for them?

The diameter of the tire isn't the problem, it's the width. I could probably fit a 31" tire on it, but the upper bead breaker arm doesn't go up that high. I think I could add a longer length of tube where the breaker arm pivots on to make it work better - I may fiddle with that when the need arises.

But I think you're right, if I wanted to be able to put a taller tire (greater than 31") it does look like I could lengthen the arms on both the lower and upper bead breaker assemblies. Dunno if it'd be worth the effort since - so far - I haven't regularly come across the need to remove anything other than stock sized tires.

autobayz went out of business? shit.

Yeah, they closed for Thanksgiving and never re-opened. There's a notice from the property leasing company through the City of Littleton showing that their shop was closed for lack of rent payment - over $17K in rent owed.

They had even started a body shop around the corner from the original unit and had taken delivery of a bunch of crates that had the paint booth parts, frame jig and other body repair related stuff - it's all now stuffed into the bays of the auto shop.

Sure is a lot of nice equipment going to waste..........

Yeah- the weekend before thanksgiving I went to mount up some tires and saw they closed for hte weekend.

Well, let me know when the auction is, they had decent equipment. :)

Neat idea, too bad it didn't work or wasn't managed right.

Yeah, I gotta question their collective promotional abilities/ideas. NO ONE ever heard of 'em! They dropped some fliers at a few car shows and hired kids from the vocational/technical schools, but they didn't seem to figure out how to target their paying customers.

I had made arrangements to host another Tech Seminar there - this month as a matter of fact - had it all set up where we'd get the entire shop for a Sunday and all shop fees would be half price for our members. I even traded some parts from a Lumina I scrapped for some shop time/tire machine time..... that I'll never see.

I'd love to buy them out and give it a shot myself. But I'm betting the rent there is astronomical. Probably the insurance too.......... And the fact that I couldn't make the kind of money I make at the cop shop.

Cool retirement idea though........

If I had any money to my name I'd be in with you, lol.

I think it could be made to work but I also think the insurance, not just the rent, would be insane. Used to be a place in parker called wood-n-u that was a by the hour DIY woodshop, it also folded.

Advert here, co4x4, the local ricer boards, and I think you'd have customers but maybe not..

Ok.......... one HUGE drawback to this tire machine is that the center tube is way too big to fit through the center holes of pretty much all of the Jeep aluminum wheels. Dammit. Those are primarily the wheels that I'd be dealing with too.

I wonder if I could find a smaller size threaded rod and cone to replace the center tube with?

Bummer.

$17K in rent owed and how long were they open for? So they have a whole paint booth just in crates waiting to go in? O man how nice would that be.

For Tire servicing tools and experts call McGEE Company. 1140 south Jason st Denver, co 80223 1-800-525-8888 or 1-303-777-2615

Is that all? I think the H. O. H. should pay the back rent and then move on in.
