compressor shutting down?

just got an almost new compressor a few weeks ago:

craftsman 15 gallon tank 3 hp 150psi max.

ive been useing it for about a week now to build my bumper, its worked fine. I normally have it going on and off for a couple hours at a time with no issues. Today i get home and when it turned on to refill it made some horrid clanking noises, so i shut it down and drained the air. About 30 minites later i turned it back on and it was running fine, until 40 psi then it shut down, almost as if its overheating. Im not sure if this is in my head of if its actually happening but it also does feel like its running hotter then before. emailed crapsman and will probably get a response to bring it in in a couple days but has anyone experienced anything similar?

thanks

Did you check the oil in it?
Its an "oilless" compressor and thats where the problem lies!

yes it is, and before i bought it everyone was raving about it being oilless and now everyone says that is probably the problem. I got it really cheap so if its crapped out at least i still have a 15 gal tank...

so a few weeks ago i was able to get the busted drain plug off the thing. Obviously this thing is fubar...

Not trying to be preachy with you, but I really wouldn't trust that tank. It's obviously not been drained in a long time, and has built up a lot of rust and water.

I've been doing the planning for the past few weeks to build my own air compressor, and I've learned a lot about the dangers of a tank blowing up.

Sorry your new machine fried -- maybe crapsman will do the warranty work on it even though you're not the original owner. Never hurts to ask.

The compressor probably only needs a replacement piston and cylinder sleeve, although the amount of rust in the tank is pretty scary but the water is typical.
