Well, I picked up my Willy's today. I also got the remnants of another '48 that I could damn near build another one out of. I've got to do a lot of sorting to do in order to determine what is sellable and what is just scrap.

My spare tub is going to the scrap yard on monday, as is the steel hard top that it had. Its actually a fairly cool top but I have no use for it and it was a home made piece that probably isn't worth much.

The aluminum hard top is a period correct piece made by Blue Star out of Wichita, KS and will be getting sold off. Its pretty cool and I like the lines of it. All the rivets definitely give it a WWII fighter plane look.

And I got bored with my wife watching some show about highschool girls that lie or some crap so I installed the brand new beachwood soft top. It still needs some of the eyelets installed for the trun buttons and the door hadles are in the back somewhere. I keep going back and forth on if I'm going to keep it or sell it. Its an expensive and very nice top, but I'm not sure if its neccessarily something I want to run on it. I'm thinking I could recoup a lot of my purchase by selling it.

Ball joint Dana 60 is sold, J20 D44 is being used for parts, rear Dana 60 housing is getting narrowed and semi-float converted to 6 lug and 35 spline, front D44 housing is narrowed and getting parts from the J20 one, rear D41?? CJ2a housing is getting sold, and front Dana 27?? CJ2a housing will also get sold.

So what is the plan for this build? I always wanted one to have to run around on my days off or the perfect day with no top. Of course olive drab green.

For now the plan is to get it running and driving, after that I'm going to start building a new frame for it and put that together as a rolling chassis. Once the new chassis is done I'll pull the body off and sell the stock frame and drive train as a rolling chassis.

The plans for the new frame/driveline are VW 1.9 MTDI, SM465, Dana 18, and either D44's or a D44/9" combo. Suspension will be SOA with flipped around front Waggy springs on both ends. A shackle reversal for the front and the spring perches moved out to give it a 90" WB. Saginaw steering w/ hydraulic assist, hydro booost for the brakes, and 35's.

The tub will be left pretty much alone minus fixing the rust spots and repainting it a flat tan. I may or may not remove the tool box from under the passenger seat so I can add another tank. It will be getting a cage and suspension seats, I'll probably cut into the rear wheel wells so that I can move the seats farther back. I'm going to put tie downs for my camping bins in the bed, plus most likely a single person jump seat for my kid on the rare occasion the entire family actually rides in it. The tops of the rear fenders will get brackets for holding ammo cans. I'll probably also integrate some sort of rifle mounting into the cage. Its going to get some MB touches as well, mainly in the interest of utility. I'm going to add the MB grab handles on the sides and rear corners and the shove/axe mounting grooves and brackets, although I might out it on the passenger side like the M38's (CJ3a) so they don't interfere with my fuel filler.

Basically the idea behind it is going to be dedicated crawler meets ultimate hunting/utility rig. Its getting a tow bar on the front with the idea being that when the entire family goes camping I can flat tow the Willys behind the XJ and use it as an expo trailer to hold a lot of the extra gear, except once we get to the trail I'll hop into the Willys and the Wife can follow me in the XJ. That way we're not dragging a trailer up and through the trails. Come hunting season my buddy can flat tow it up to where we'll be hunting and then we can use it like a side by side to get farther into the hills and then drag our kills back to the truck/camp with. With the 4spd and diesel I should also be able to drive that thing anywhere I want and get damn good fuel economy too, so it won't have to be flat towed either. I'm going to build a small trailer for it too, that way when the world ends I can take my EMP proof mechanical diesel powered rig and load it up with all my stuff and just disappear into the woods.

This is the exact WB and stance I'm going for, 90" on 36's SOA w/ Waggy springs (although he swapped out the rear for a 4 link)

And then Meiser's rig. 35's, 85" WB, and ultra low.

that last pic is great -- it shows just how small a CJ2a is -- If you hadn't have said those were 35's, I would have sworn they were close to 40s, that is until you see it next to a stocker...

I found a new spare tire mounting bracket in the back so I decided to throw it on

I think this little vacuum operated fan is cool

And here is a little 6v vacuum pump that runs the fan and wipers

Stowed all the soft top bows/rods

And since David (o-gauge-steamer) insisted I install the drip rail as soon as possible I painted it (the same color I'll eventually paint the entire Jeep) and bolted it in.

And the XJ loaded up to haul the remanants of a CJ away to the scrap yard

Tow bar sits nice and flat

I think it looks awesome, its like seeing a grandkid helping out his paps.

I towed it down to work (just 3miles or so) so I can pressure wash it tomorrow. I only got up to about 50mph but it towed nicely behind the XJ.

Because it was rusted out and only good for patch panels. I don't have the room for it and would just assume by the plethora of available panels made from nice, new, solid steel.

It's getting the Krawlers off my XJ, I just need to figure out what I'm going to put on it and then come up with the money to buy them.
