I just bought a 90 xj and so far with replacing the inexpensive things it will not pass emissions, I was informed that it is the sellers responsibility to get it to pass, any suggestions on getting the seller to at least help pay to fix it. Is selling a vehical that wont pass have any repurcutions?

That's what the law says. A dealer is allowed to supply a voucher for YOU to get the test done, but they still have to make-good if the vehicle fails. The dealer we went through got the thing to pass, they didn't want it back. LOL

If you notice the ads that say "tow away", it's a pretty good guess the seller wants to avoid the requirement. I'm sure they have other ways to avoid the liability.

What test did it fail?

ditto, why did it fail?

the F250 at work with 250k on the ticker failed, the cat for that truck for an OE fit is like 1200 bucks so I bought a $35 cat on ebay and spliced it in, didn't even weld it, fit tight on it's own.

That law only applies to dealers, not your private Joe on the street. Throw some of that emissions pass junk you can buy at any of the major parts stores. It worked miracles on my tired/dying Mustang's 4-cylinder. Failed badly with the first attempt. Second attempt I added enough product to treat 20 gallons to about 2, drove it up to the station and it passed. I even left the empty bottle and box sitting in the front seat for all to see! Since all I was trying for was an e-sticker before I swapped in the big block I drove it home and parked it for a couple of months. I ran terrible after that. I dunno what the stuff did to the injectors and really didn't care, but I am sure if I would have burned off all the tainted fuel it would have been fine. Good luck!
