so my girlfriends mom 06 Chevy colbalt has a clunking noise.if you driving and go over a bump, or bump the brakes you notice it. so I jack it up. checked all the suspension and steering compenents could find anything. then when moving the wheel back and forth noticed a clunk coming from the manual transaxle. where the CV axles go in.

when i move the tire or axle back and forth i notice the sound but when the tire starts rotating in one direction the sound stops.

I dont know much about transaxles.

any ideas or suggestions would be great.

If we are thinking the same thing, that is nothing to worry about and happens on every transaxle I know of. I think it is the cumulative backlash of the planetary gears getting taken up.

I don't know how the Cobalt is put together, but a common problem on the Volvos I work on is that the strut mount will blow out. When you pop the hood, there should be 2-3 smaller nuts & one *big* one on the strut mount. Those smaller nuts hold the strut mount / strut plate to the body. Frequently, these pieces will blow out (at least on Volvos. Never seen one bad on a Toyota, our shop's other brand) and make noise over bumps.

Put the vehicle back on its own weight & with a flashlight, poke around & look for anything that could be cracked / separating.

You can also try bouncing on it and listening, or having a partner walk around the car & listen, to isolate the area the clunk is coming from.

check for service bulletins on steering column clunk, or call your dealer and talk to the service dept

I used to own a cobalt, they suck.

i would double check the control arms, every cobalt that has come threw the shop i work at needed them, including mine. just a suggestion.

I would think either the control arm bushings or sway bar links. I believe there are bulletins for both.
