Anybody know a good CB shop in houston that I could go to for a peak & tune, and maybe to get an antenna tuned? Also curious as to how much it would probably cost...

just get yourself an antenna tuner. about 25-30 bucks and do it yourself. its really really easy. as far as the peak&tune the legal limit if I remember right is 4 amps on a CB and the shops will not go over that, these days most of the CB's come already maxed. there are ways to go further but really no need to but to annoy the person on the receiving end.

So on a decent radio like the Uniden 520XL (which I am planning to get), you don't think a peak and tune would help performance significantly?

not really if it is new. It should be pretty well tuned already. then get the best antenna that you can afford. The antenna is the most important item to the setup. Just remember to NEVER ever try to transmit with no antenna hooked up, it will harm if not destroy the radio. I got my antenna tuner from "Fry's" off of west rd in Houston, it works great. i just had to pick up a very short 12" r45 cable to go between the radio and the tuner. Follow the directions in the box, and it will be really easy. i had never done one till I did mine(always had it done for me) and wished I had the tuner earlier as it is that easy...

Well, after exchanging the original antenna which was defective, the new one is also showing high swr ch1-1.9, ch.40-4. Since I'm also having some trouble with engine noise interference, I'm once again looking for a shop that can help me with this...
Uniden 520XL, Wilson Little Wil.

where do you have the CB wired to? also on the cb you can turn down the interference.

Straight to batt for both terminals. I can turn up the squelch, but the engine noise is so bad I can't hear anyone over it clearly-turning the squelch up enough to cut the noise also cuts out transmissions.
