Sad thing is as far as I know they have to be demolished when a car dealer takes them in!

7 of the 10 are Fords though :roflmao:

hahaha I love how 6 out of the top 10 are Exploders :D

Although I will say my Aunt has a 98 with 250K on the original motor and it's still running strong...and she's not one for car maintenance.

This sucks for us in two ways. Not only are they scapping a bunch of Cherokees and Grands, but they are scrapping a whole lot of 8.8 rear axles too.

they are scrapping all of the vehicles that will actually run a long time...what a great idea. the explorers are pretty reliable if you dont have the timing chain guide issues...and we all know about xj's and zj's. I hope they run out of money quick and cancel the bill!

The axles can be salvaged, just not the engine.

I heard the same thing, that all the vehicles will go to salvage but of course the motors are junk. I've seen a lot of pictures of piles of crushed cars. Hopefully these are not vehicles that were just traded in on that program.

Yeah my last trip out to pull a part I found out that the entire Chrysler and Euro sections were empty. Nothing but rows and rows of steel wheels. What they do have in chryslers is now in part of the for section. Don't think it's related directly but just seemed odd on the timing.

According to an article in Time Magazine the engine must be destroyed but parts can be sold for 180 days. Time Magazine What Happens to trade-in cars in Cash for Clunkers?

Once the engine is dead, a recycling lot can take possession of the car. From that time, it has 180 days to sell the pieces of the car that retain some value. Even though the engine's a lost cause, everything from the scrap metal to the hubcaps is available to buyers. When the resale period is up, any leftover parts must be destroyed, and the government is notified that the car is gone for good.

Still 180 days isn't much.

I hope they didn't find some way to scam the Clunkers program. More likely, perhaps they're just getting ready for the influx of clunkers into the yard or just needed some cash flow.

Yeah we might be able to find some killer deals on axles and DS's for a couple months but we're gonna have to pay top dollar for a new engine in years to come...that's the reason for the engines being killed. None in JYs to swap into yours...

I was at pull-a-part a few weeks ago, they had an article posted right when you walked in that reads "Government trying to close down junk yards." Apparently our government is trying to pass a law that shutsdown junkyards everywhere. This is suppose to stimulate the hurting dealerships because now people will be forced to buy something new...

How much sense does that make? If they shut them (junkyards) down I'm screwed...ya I will go buy a new car...get approved for 20k worth of a loan, and then NEVER make a payment, I can't afford that crap, nor do I want to make a damn car payment...So then the banks and credit card companys will get back into turmoil because people aren't paying on their loans....and the cycle continues. Haha. It seems the government is trying to tack a solution to the wrong problem...

I feel the problem is more of the dealerships being greedy, over charging for there vehicles for sale, and the service they perform. When all the money they make off a car sale gets back into the pockets of the CEO's....I think that's where the problem lies.

The thing that really pisses me off is we are funding this whole thing with every dollar we work hard for.:smsoap:

The am willing to bet that there is not ONE person in the House or Senate that has ever lived from paycheck to paycheck to truly understand the effect of this on the poor and lower middle class.

Also the thing people seem to forget when they say "Go buy a new car" is the insurance bill that goes with it. Add another $100 to $200 a month to the price of that New Car they are trying to force on us!

yeh, im thinking about getting one of the new jeep JK 4doors and if one person at the lot asks me if im trading in my 2003 tacoma on the CARS program ill slap them and walk off the lot...

what gets me fired up is that the people who mostly own the cars that are worthy of being shot and killed in an act of stupidity CANT AFFORD A NEW CAR! so bring in your clunker and get some debt woot! lets do our part for the economy and environment.

sad thing is environmentalist have already said that this program will only reduce oil consumption and pollution by a fraction of one percent that is put out each year...

yay government for spending my tax dollars on a program that will only stimulate car sales for 2-3 weeks and cost us 1billion a week all for more debt on the american public (not only national but personal) and the environment doesnt get but a drop of it... YAY

Yep. Looks like 10x the number of Explorers are being traded in vs. XJs.

the toyota lot here has filled up with clunker trade ins.... nice cars too, late 90's pickups, mid sizes even cars.... itll be sad to see all that go to waste... most were cars that id be happy to drive and be debt free
