Im planning on ordering a 3.4 out of a 1994 camaro for my 85 Cherokee. The engine is FI, but im wanting to change it over to a Carb. I want a 2 brl carb, but I dont know where to start. I went to the local Car Quest today and they said that a rebuilt one would be $614!!!!! He then showed me a Holley carb (i believe) and it was $370, and that was new....I'm not sure what I need and I sure dont want to pay $600 for one if I can get around it. Any help is appreciated. By the way, I'm on the road 90% of the time.

May I ask why you are trying to go backwards in technology, performance and reliability?

I'm serious, I really want to know.

I had the same problem when my carb in my 86 cherokee went bad, I just went to a local junk yard and got a good rodchester 2bbl for 20.00. Blocked all vaccume lines except the PVC and vaccume addvance on the Distributor and removed all vaccume/electrical chokes and put a manual choke on. I also made a plate to block the EGR on the intake. The distributor on your 3.4 will not work cause it requiers a advance paulse signal from the computer. Use the distributor from the 2.8 with vaccume advance. Worked out great for me and runs good. I am now planning a 2.8 to 4.3 swap. Good Luck

Yo.

Did the same mod on my 85 XJ. Went with the Weber 38DGES carb and a RamFlo filter and now she does 60 up Vail Pass! The whole kit from webercarbs.com is about $500 but well worth it.

You'll double your low end torque and horses and adds about 25-50 percent on the top end.

The 3.4 conversion is easy. Took me a day. One more mod I'd recommend: buy exhaust headers and a larger exhaust. You can get up to 250 HP with this set-up.

good luck and later.

Crash: I would have to put a chip in my 85 for the FI to work, correct? I just dont want to hassle with all that...thats all.

Thanks for all your replies, It sounds like the weber carb is the way to go.

85Chief:

Several things to consider when upgrading to the 3.4L:
1. If you go with the Weber Carb, you need to get an electric fuel pump that puts out no more than 3.5 PSI. If you can't find one, then buy a Holley fuel pressure regulator with by-pass, or one with two outlets.
2. You need to install an oil pressure switch so when you lose it, the fuel pump shuts off and you protect your engine. With that in mind, you should install a momentary by-pass switch in case you run out of gas. That way you get fuel to the carb.
3. Your flex plate off the 2.8L needs to neutrally balanced as the 3.4L is balanced on the crankshaft and the 3.4L is a three hole rather than four. I just bought a new one for the 2.8 as the teeth were wearing out and had it neutrally balanced.
4. Although many people say the oil pump and the oil pan should be swapped from the 2.8 to the 3.4, they are identical and it is a waste of time. Keep as spares, especially the oil pan. You never know when you're going to hit that too tall rock.
5. Replace your motor mounts, belts, hoses, and clean the inside of your bell housing while you have a chance. Double check everything else as you tear it down.

Have fun and the engine is actually a strong one.

There are a lot of websites concerning the 2.8L to 3.4L conversion. Here's a few of them:

http://www.off-road.com/jeep/cherokee/xjtech/engine/28-34swap.html

http://members.shaw.ca/betterthanyou/2.8l to 3.4l/engine swap.htm

http://home.earthlink.net/~micfly/conversion.htm

There are others, but the conversion is actually really easy since the 3.4L has the same external bolt holes for all the necessary engine parts.

The off-road conversion site is the best as it's XJ specific. Just take your time and the change over is really easy.

Good luck and e-mail if you have any questions.
